IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people argued that advertising is significantly important in persuading us to purchase products, while others believe that nowadays advertising is very common, so no one pays attention to it. These essay will discuss both views and present my own opinion.
Some people believe that advertising is a better way to influence customers to buy things. The major reason is that advertisements can attract customers’ attention. Advertising plays a key role to influence customers with attractive designs, colours, and themes. When customers see advertisements for products, they may attract by its elegant and modern design and plan to buy. Moreover, products build brand recognition. When products are designed according to customers’ needs and preferences, they can be promoted more effectively. Therefore, effective advertising can not only attract customers but also influence their purchasing decisions.
Others argue that advertising is so common nowadays that people no longer pay attention to it. One significant reason is the lack of trust in advertisements. Many people do not believe that advertised products can fully meet their requirements because advertisements often exaggerate the quality and benefits of a product. For instance, a person may purchase watch after seeing an attractive advertisement, but when the products arrives, it may look completely different from what was shown in the advertisement. Another significant reason is that consumers tend to focus more on their personal needs. When individuals consider factors such as price, quality, and customer reviews, they are less likely to be influenced by advertisements. Before purchasing a product, most people check its quality and read reviews from other customers to determine whether it is worth buying.
In a nutshell, some people believe that advertisement plays an important role in persuading customers to purchase products, while others argue that people no longer pay attention to advertisements. In my opinion, both views are important when making decision about whether a product is useful or worth buying. However, I believe that consumers should primarily consider their needs, the quality of the product, and its benefits before making a purchase.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. The arguments are relevant and logically structured, with the first body paragraph focusing on the persuasive power of advertising and the second on consumer skepticism. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about 'brand recognition' is mentioned but not fully explained in relation to the prompt. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and could have been more insightful by synthesizing the two views rather than just restating them. Overall, the task is addressed well, but the depth of analysis could be increased to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', 'For instance', and 'In a nutshell' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the phrase 'These essay' in the introduction is grammatically incorrect and disrupts the cohesion. Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. Despite these minor flaws, the progression of ideas is clear throughout the response, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'brand recognition', 'purchasing decisions', and 'exaggerate'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler vocabulary. Some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'may attract by its elegant' (should be 'may be attracted by'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range. The current level is sufficient for the task but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'Some people argued' (should be 'argue'), 'These essay' (should be 'This essay'), and 'when the products arrives' (should be 'product arrives'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede overall communication. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for more error-free complex sentences and ensure better control over subject-verb agreement and pluralization.
