IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Advertising is everywhere today, from TV and social media billboards on the street. While other believe that advertisements are very effective at influencing our buying decisions, others argue that we have become so used to them that we simply ignore them. While opinions remain divided, I firmly contend that advertising is still powerful, but its depends on how it is presented. Those who think advertising is extremely persuasive have strong reasons. Furthermore, companies spend billons of dollars on ads because they work. Advertisements use celebrities, attractive visuals, and emotional stories to create a desire in people. This is best illustrated by when a famous cricketer promotes a drink, many young people fans immediately want to buy it. This can primarily be attributed to online ads are even more effective because they are target. This in turns gives rise to you search for shoes once, you will see shoes ads everywhere. This shows that advertising directly. The foremost justification lies in the fact that some people believe advertising has lost its effect because we see it too often. In addition we skip youtube ads, ignore facebook sponsored posts, and change the TV channel during commercial. More importantly, people are now more aware and do their own research before buying. Therefore, many feel that advertising is just background noise now. For these reasons, I remain firmly convinced that both views are partly true. Traditional ads may be ignored, but smart and targeted advertising still influences us a lot. The key is relevance. If an ad is creative and useful, people pay attention. If it is repetitive and boring, people ignore it. In conclusion, although we are exposed too many ads, well made advertising continous to persuade people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of celebrity endorsements and the phenomenon of targeted online ads. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the paragraph discussing the 'background noise' argument is a bit brief, and some sentences, such as 'This shows that advertising directly,' are incomplete or lack sufficient explanation. To reach a higher band, ensure that every point made is fully expanded with clear reasoning and illustrative examples that link back to the prompt's core question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore,' 'In addition,' and 'Therefore,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'This in turns gives rise to you search for shoes once.' Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow. Improving the variety and precision of linking words will help the essay achieve a more natural and sophisticated structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at topic-specific language like 'targeted advertising' and 'commercial.' However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'billons of dollars' (spelling), 'young people fans,' and 'well made advertising.' The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct grammatical form.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'its depends on how it is presented,' 'online ads are even more effective because they are target,' and 'exposed too many ads.' Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms would significantly improve the accuracy.
