IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the past, there were basic things to buy and there were not too many high five things. Everyone including elite and improvised people ate and wore the same things. But today there are many new and expensive things like sushi to eat and some modern things to buy and for wear and many more. Improvised people can't afford to buy them and some people don't know about it. There were not advertising in the past, everyone had same things. But today someone has to increase his sells then, he advertised his that specific thing.

Advertising is used to increase the sells of specific thing. Nowadays, advertising is the most common things to advertised the specific thing. Some people believe that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. But other people thinks that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. I agree with that people who says advertising is being successful. When we see something interesting on the social media, then we order that thing in a quick. As for the other people, they says also right that we are tired to see advertising and we are no longer pay attention to that. We are not paying attention to the tolet and advertising banners but we pay attention to the social media.

In conclusion, I think that people are right who says that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Like when we see something in the social media we buy them in a quick without thinking.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. The introductory paragraph is largely irrelevant to the prompt, focusing on historical consumption patterns rather than the nature of advertising. The body paragraphs attempt to discuss the effectiveness of advertising, but the arguments lack depth and supporting evidence. The explanation of why people ignore ads versus why they are persuaded is superficial. To improve, you should focus on providing specific examples or logical reasoning to support your arguments rather than repeating the same points about social media.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'In conclusion', 'As for the other people'), they are often used incorrectly or in a way that makes the text feel mechanical. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'I agree with that people who says', which disrupts the flow. The transition between the historical context in the introduction and the actual task is abrupt and lacks logical connection. Better use of linking words and clearer topic sentences would improve the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. Words like 'things', 'buy', and 'advertising' are used excessively throughout the text. There are also several instances of incorrect word choice and non-standard phrasing, such as 'high five things', 'improvised people' (likely meaning 'impoverished'), and 'in a quick'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas effectively. To reach a higher band, you need to move beyond basic vocabulary and learn to use more precise terms and collocations related to the topic of marketing and consumer behaviour.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'other people thinks', 'they says'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are simple or contain errors in word order, such as 'There were not advertising in the past'. The use of complex structures is attempted but usually results in errors, such as 'I agree with that people who says advertising is being successful'. A significant focus on basic grammar, particularly verb tenses and pluralisation, is necessary to improve clarity and accuracy.
