IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
A number of people argue that advertisments play a significant role in purchasing things. Others believe that advertising is so prevalent that people are not interested in them anymore. I think that ads are still important because a lot of people buy things after seeing them.
On one hand, brands spend a huge amount of money on commercials so that it can reach a large number of audience. Businesses present their goods in a glamorous and appealing way that viewers cannot resist it and buy those items as soon as they saw them. Due to advancements in technology, there is an increasing trend in campaigns to advertise their products online which results in increase in sales and generate profit. For instance, I watch many advertisements on different social media platforms and i got influenced by the products which are novel. Therefore, I bought a variety of items online through these advertisements. Recently, I bought a hot air brush for my hairs from an ad which was about how good their hair dryer to control frizz.
On the other hand, advertisments have become so common that people no longer find them appealing. While scrolling social media apps such as TikTok or Instagram, there is an advertisement after every three or four videos. So, we get used to it so much that we do not pay any attention to it and just keep on scrolling. Further, a lot of products are not useful for us and they keep appearing as ads on our social media accounts which also wastes time. For example, internet users just skip ads while using social media to save their time and money.
To conclude, advertisments are important to some people in buying useful things. In contrast, it is a wastage of time for others. In my opinion, we are encountered with different types of advertisments in our daily life, that's why, it is unable to not pay any attention to them and they still play a great role in increasing sales of brands.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the influence of social media marketing versus the tendency to ignore repetitive ads. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of why people ignore ads could be more deeply explored beyond just 'wasting time'. The position is consistent throughout, but the conclusion could be more sophisticated to better reflect the complexity of the debate. Overall, it meets the requirements for a Band 6.5, leaning towards 6.0 due to the somewhat repetitive nature of the arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there is some mechanical use of these devices, and referencing is occasionally slightly awkward, such as in the sentence 'we get used to it so much', where the pronoun 'it' lacks a clear singular antecedent. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear and the paragraphing is appropriate for an IELTS task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'campaigns', 'social media platforms', and 'glamorous'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'generate profit' (should be 'generating profit') and 'it is unable to not pay any attention' (which is clunky and unnatural). The range is sufficient for the task, but lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement. Examples include 'as soon as they saw them' (should be 'see'), 'i got influenced' (should be 'I am influenced'), and 'how good their hair dryer to control' (missing verb). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the grammatical slips are frequent enough to prevent a higher score, though they rarely impede overall communication.
