IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Whilst many people believe that advertising of products is very common because we do not pay much attention to it, I think it is highly successful at persuading us to make a purchase because it informs about a product and attracts us to try things out.
One of the main reasons of why people think advertising is not effective anymore is because of the lack of the point of differences in many promotional campaigns nowadays. The marketing strategies and promotional approaches are very repetitive and similar to other competitors. or example, most companies now promote their products through AI generated videos to reduce marketing cost, whereas the old advertisements used to invest a large amount to make marketing more creative and unique. Hence, the absence of diversity make people less anticipated about new launches.
On the other hand, I truly believe that advertisements have a significant influence on our buying habits because through this we get to know about a wide range of product and make an informed decision according to our needs and wants. For instance, girls get easily influenced by the videos of newly launched dresses in online clothing stores and end up buying them even when they do not need them. Moreover, a good marketing strategy and engaging approach make people talk about brands and buy things. For example, in many job fairs, company not only accept CVs the also promote their services and products by interactive games or displays, persuading people to buy them.
In conclusion, although it is true that advertisings are becoming less attractive because of the common marketing approach, I firmly believe advertisements in general have a huge persuasive power because it lets people know of products and influence them to buy it with unique marketing strategy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. The arguments are relevant, such as the mention of repetitive AI-generated content versus the informative nature of advertising. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The example regarding 'girls' and 'dresses' is a bit anecdotal and lacks the depth required for a higher band. To improve, ensure that each point is fully extended with more sophisticated reasoning or broader societal examples rather than relying on specific, narrow scenarios. The position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level of task response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'For instance', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the phrase 'the lack of the point of differences' is slightly awkward, and the transition between the two body paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the central topic of each paragraph is clear.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'marketing strategies', 'promotional campaigns', and 'informed decision'. However, there are some inaccuracies and unnatural phrasing, such as 'make people less anticipated' (should be 'less expectant' or 'less excited') and 'the absence of the point of differences'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise and varied vocabulary would be needed to reach a higher band. Avoid repetitive use of basic verbs like 'make' or 'buy'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'One of the main reasons of why' (should be 'reasons why'), 'company not only accept CVs the also promote' (should be 'companies not only accept CVs but also promote'), and 'advertisings' (advertising is an uncountable noun). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
