IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some people think that advertisment is a very good way of urging people to purchase products. While other people think that advertisment is very ordinary and get no longer attention.
Firstly, we discuss about first vision of people who think that advertisment is very good way to get more attention of people.Advertisment help people to get information about new things. When a company or brand launches a new product the advertise it,so they get attention of people and persuade people to buy their product. For example if a car company import a new car they advertise it in newspaper on social media and also in streets,so people may get information about it and also describe its features that might persuade people to buy their car.In this way,by advertisment people get information about in new things and also has information about it.
While other people think that advertisment is very ordinary way and people didn't pay attention to advertisment. This is also fact. There is majority of people in our country that do not pay attention to advertisment. In this way the advertisement doesn't help people to get information and they ignore the advertisement. In this way the company could not persuade people to buy thier products. For example,if a new brand of clothes opens at any place and they want to get attention of people by advertising, they couldn't. Because many people ignore the advertisement,so they can't get attention of people. In this way they can't sale their products and thier vision of getting attention of people through advertisment also fails.
In short, I'm neutral from both of point of views.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views presented in the prompt, but the development is limited. While you provide examples for both sides, such as the car company and the clothing brand, the analysis remains somewhat superficial. The task asks for your own opinion, but you state that you are 'neutral' in the conclusion without providing a clear, reasoned argument for why you hold this position. To improve, ensure that your personal stance is clearly articulated and supported with more depth, rather than simply stating a neutral position, which can make the essay feel underdeveloped.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'In this way' are used multiple times, which makes the flow feel somewhat stilted. Additionally, the transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' 'on the other hand') and ensure that referencing is clear throughout the text to improve the logical progression of your arguments.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic terms like 'very good' and 'very ordinary' repeatedly. There are also consistent spelling errors, such as 'advertisment' (advertisement) and 'thier' (their). To improve, focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and ensure accurate spelling. Expanding your vocabulary to include topic-specific collocations related to marketing and consumer behavior would significantly enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they often contain grammatical errors, such as 'get no longer attention' and 'if a car company import a new car'. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering complex sentence forms and proofreading for basic errors in verb tense and pluralization. Increasing the variety of your sentence structures will help demonstrate better control over English grammar.
