IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is common to advertisement of any business or selling things to people so some people think they can peruse them to buy thing but it is not necessary because most of the people might ignored it and do not give any attention to them.

First of all we talk on those people who think it is successful in some ways so they are those people that do not want to waste their time and they just buy things when they watch advertisement but they are not keen on checking weather it is good in quality or not. And they just buy it through listening or watching there benefits

On the other hand some people are very keen in quality as well as in quantity so they ignored the advertisements when they are passing by from market of either they are watching one phone or TV they think that we saw these hundred times but in effective. These companies often fails to get people's attention despite spending a lot of money. And they wants to buy thing in person for keeping them away from being scammed.

Personally, I prefer shopping in person, because in advertisement they don't clear weather it is sustainable or not you can buy it after making satisfied yourself. But it is also effective but only when it is creative and targeted. People may ignored boring or repeated ads, but a good advertisement can still influence their choices .

In conclusion while advertising can persuade consumers to ,its success is limited because people are exposed to too many ads

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the task. However, the development of ideas is limited. For instance, the explanation of why some people ignore advertisements is repetitive and lacks depth, relying on vague statements like 'they think that we saw these hundred times but in effective'. The argument regarding personal preference is also somewhat underdeveloped. To improve, you should provide more specific examples or logical reasoning to support your claims, ensuring that each point is fully explored rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, the transition 'First of all we talk on those people' is unnatural, and the connection between sentences is frequently weak. There is a lack of variety in linking words, and the progression of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed. To achieve a higher score, focus on using a wider range of linking phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') to create a smoother flow between your arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise, which occasionally hinders clarity. There are several instances of incorrect word choice, such as 'peruse' instead of 'persuade', 'weather' instead of 'whether', and 'in effective' instead of 'ineffective'. The repetition of basic words like 'things' and 'buy' suggests a restricted range. To improve, you should work on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensure you are using words in their correct context. Expanding your range of synonyms for common terms will also help you express your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'companies often fails'), incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'might ignored'), and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on or lack necessary punctuation, making them difficult to parse. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, they are often faulty. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and correct tense usage, before attempting more complex grammatical forms.
