IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Advertising is one of the most important components for any enterprise to succeed. The growth of the business depends on the number of customers which can be attracted by the means of advertisements. Advertising is the source of information through which consumers know about the products of the company. Some people argued that advertising is successfully persuading us to purchase things. While some think that not enough attention is provided to the advertisements as they seem to be so common.
To embark on, advertisements help in providing knowledge about the products and services companies are offering to a wide range of buyers. It provides details about the special features of the products, designs available, discounts, special offers and so on. Moreover, entrepreneurs design their advertisements in a fascinating manner which attracts more and more customers. For instance, Electronics companies provide an advertisement during festival season that reflects special offers and huge discounts on the electronic appliances which successfully persuade customers to buy them and helps the owners to earn higher profits.
On the contrary to this, others argued that customers no longer pay attention to the advertisements. Firstly, some businesses display their advertisements repeatedly that the viewer found it monotonous and pay less attention. Furthermore, some advertisements do not provide adequate amount of information, so the consumers considered it as of no use and simply ignores it. To elaborate, various enterprises are using same designs and methods in order to advertising their products which make customers less interesting. To exemplify, various stores selling smartphones uses similar way of advertising mobile phones also without giving proper description that does not match the interest of the consumers.
To recapitulate, in my perception, although advertisements are becoming very common day-by-day, it is useful way to provide necessary information and awareness to the consumers about the products. Owners are successful in attracting customers in a large number. Additionally, every coin has two sides, in the same way this phenomenon has also both aspects having individual values and neither of them can be stated wrong but still I agreed that advertisements are really essential for both the customers and companies as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the discussion on electronic appliances during festivals. However, the development of the second viewpoint is slightly repetitive, and the conclusion could be more nuanced. While the position is clear, the argument could benefit from more sophisticated analysis of why consumers might ignore advertisements beyond just 'monotony'. Overall, the response meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'To embark on', 'On the contrary to this', and 'To recapitulate' are used to guide the reader, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. Referencing is generally clear, though there are minor issues with pronoun agreement and flow between sentences. The progression of ideas is consistent throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'enterprises', 'monotonous', and 'phenomenon'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'make customers less interesting' (should be 'less interested') and 'advertising their products' (should be 'advertise'). The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Some people argued' instead of 'argue', 'stores... uses' instead of 'use', and 'I agreed' instead of 'I agree'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentence constructions are slightly awkward. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score as they occur consistently throughout the text.
