IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
FEW INDIVIUALS BELIEVE THAT ADVERTISING IS VERY SUCCESSFUL TO BUY THINGS WHILES OTHER HOLD THE VIEW THAT THIS IS VERY COMMAN IN THESE DAYS AND PEOPLE HAV NO ATTENTION ON THAT.
EVERY SINGLE DAY PEOPLE CAN SEE NEW ADVERTISEMENT ON TV , SOCAIL MEDIA AND SO ON . THIS WILL HELP PEOPLE TO GET KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THAT PARTICULAR THING. FOR EXAMPLE, Today, I SAW ONE ADVERTISEMENT ON FACEBOOK ABOUT IPHONE 18. I WAS NOT AWARE ABOUT THEIR NEW COLOURS AND SOME NEW FECTURES AS WELL. AND FROM THAT ADVERTISEMENT I GOT MORE INFORMATATION ABOUT PHONE AND NOW I AM PLANNING TO BUY WHEN THEY LAUNCH .
ON THE OTHER HAND , PEOPLE ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION ON ADVERTISMENT, BECAUSE THAT IS VERY COMMAN WAY IN TODAY'S WORLD. PEOPLE NEED TO CHANGE THAT STATEGAY SO THEY CAN INCREASE THEIR PRODUCTS SELL
ACCORDING TO ME BOTH HAVE SOME GOOD OR BAD POSINTS.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 150 words. Consequently, the development of ideas is severely limited. While you attempt to address both views and provide an opinion, the arguments are underdeveloped and lack the necessary depth for an academic essay. The points made about advertising on social media and the lack of consumer attention are superficial. To improve, you must expand each body paragraph with more detailed explanations, relevant examples, and a more thorough analysis of the prompt's implications. The current length significantly restricts your ability to demonstrate the level of task response required for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is weak. The transition between the two viewpoints is abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is minimal and sometimes mechanical (e.g., 'On the other hand'). The concluding paragraph is very brief and does not effectively synthesize the arguments presented. To improve, you should use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect sentences and paragraphs more fluidly, ensuring that each idea flows logically into the next. Improving the structure of your arguments will help the reader follow your line of reasoning more clearly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits your ability to express complex ideas. There are several spelling errors, such as 'INDIVIUALS', 'COMMAN', 'HAV', 'SOCAIL', 'FECTURES', 'INFORMATATION', and 'STATEGAY'. These errors, combined with the limited range of vocabulary, make the writing feel simplistic. To achieve a higher score, you need to move beyond common words and attempt to use more precise, academic vocabulary. Focus on learning the correct spelling of common words and expanding your range of collocations related to the topic of advertising and consumer behavior.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include 'FEW INDIVIUALS BELIEVE' (should be 'A few individuals'), 'SUCCESSFUL TO BUY' (should be 'successful in persuading us to buy'), and 'PEOPLE HAV NO ATTENTION ON THAT' (should be 'people pay no attention to it'). The sentence structures are mostly simple, with very few attempts at complex grammatical forms. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of prepositions. Incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, will also help demonstrate a higher level of grammatical control.
