IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argued that advertising is have become the best way to promote people to buy products and it may also be a very common way that it is no longer effective in attracting people towards it. I strongly agree with the view that advertisement is becoming a common thing for people and there is no much attraction in them. The further view will be discussed in the essay.
Starting from the first view of society, it is observed from the survey that people mostly buy things after watching an advertisement and it attracts them the most. Another great factor is that people believe the thing that is trusted by their favourite person . The advertising is great field that allows the retailers to show what they have on a large scale and also to provoke the customers to buy their products. The advertising has a great effect on public as it allows to make up the living for many people.
Now coming to the other view, many people believe that it is too common way of attracting people. They think that the world has progressed too much but the the way of attracting people through advertising is same as ever. According to them, as technology is advancing there should also be an update in the way of attracting people towards them. Rather the standard way of advertising, they should involve latest technology and make it a little more innovative. This will result in more dynamic way of advertising such as 3D screens used for advertisement .
Finally I will conclude that although advertisement is best way to attract people but it needs some updates as per the advancing world around us.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the task. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding 'trusted favourite persons' is mentioned but not fully explored or linked back to the core debate about advertising effectiveness. The conclusion is brief and lacks a summary of the main points. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or deeper analysis for each perspective rather than relying on general statements. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments need more depth and logical extension to fully satisfy the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'another great factor' or 'now coming to the other view'. Some transitions feel forced, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally disjointed. For example, the transition from the first paragraph to the second is abrupt. While there is a clear attempt at paragraphing, the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'great field', 'great effect', and 'best way'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'promote people to buy' (should be 'encourage' or 'persuade') and 'make up the living for many people'. While the meaning is clear throughout, the lack of more sophisticated or topic-specific vocabulary limits the score. To improve, focus on using more precise verbs and adjectives that are appropriate for an academic discussion on marketing and consumer behaviour.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally hinder the flow. Examples include 'advertising is have become', 'there is no much attraction', and 'the the way'. You rely mostly on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences often contain errors in subject-verb agreement or article usage. Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction needs more variety and accuracy. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence patterns and proofreading for common errors like article misuse and verb tense consistency, which currently occur too frequently to merit a higher score.
