IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In this contemporary era, advertising plays a significant role in boosting the sales of various products. Supporters of advertisements argue that this technique is playing a very vital role in influencing us to buy things. In contrast, critics believe that these advertisements are becoming so common that nobody consider them while selecting a product. I partially agree with the critics as in my opinion advertisement are becoming quite common.
According to the first argument, advertisement influence our view point related to a specific product and attract us to buy it. It is a fact that ads provide us a fair knowledge about the quality of product. In addition, it demonstrate the usage and benefits too. Moreover, it also depicts the kinds of ingredients used in a specific product. Such techniques persuade the listener of a add to buy it. For instance, I recently watch an advertisement of a shampoo on television. This ad influence me a lot that I have to buy it. The thing which particular motivate me to buy this was the fact that the advertisement shows the natural ingredients are used in this shampoo which benefits hair a lot . Therefore I purchase it.
Conversely, the opponent criticize this view point. They are somehow right about that. In this contemporary era, advertisements are becoming less influential in order to attract customers due to various reasons. First and foremost, nowadays people prefer to buy quality products . Instead of being attracted buy graphical ads they choose those products which is manufactured from high quality supplements. The another reason is the presence of large quantity of ads and people get bored watching them. However , they still have a considerable affect on the coustmer choice. Done people still consider them before buying anything.Nevertheless, there is a drop in a influence of these ads on the purchasing choice of a coustmer.
In conclusion, I partially agree with the view point related to decline in the importance of ads in recent times . The major reason is that people opt for better quality product and get bored from old ads. However, it still somehow persuade the customer to choose a specific product.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the informative nature of ads versus the saturation of media. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The first body paragraph provides a personal example, which is good, but the second body paragraph is slightly repetitive and lacks depth in explaining why consumers are becoming desensitized. The position is consistent throughout, but the arguments could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, but the analysis remains at a somewhat surface level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', 'Conversely', and 'First and foremost'. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly forced. There are also issues with referencing and flow; for instance, the sentence 'The another reason is the presence of large quantity of ads' is slightly disjointed. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints and the conclusion, which helps the reader follow the argument, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'contemporary era', 'influencing', and 'supplements'. However, there are several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'add' instead of 'ad', 'coustmer' instead of 'customer', and 'affect' used where 'effect' was intended. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on mastering the spelling of common academic terms and ensuring that word forms (e.g., noun vs. verb) are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('advertisement influence', 'nobody consider', 'advertisement are', 'products which is manufactured'). There are also errors with articles and prepositions ('the influence of these ads', 'the another reason'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over basic grammatical rules and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve your score.
