Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people claimed that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. It is true because by advertising people know about things that they have not know. By advertising people come to know about new things and they also know how to buy online things. Advertising is an essential part of online marketing. it not only the significant part of online market it is also the important factor of physical marketing. Advertising encourages people for shopping. It also give chances to people to buy new things and new items. By adverting people came to know about new things that came into market and buy these things. Advertisement is helpful in shopping.

Some people also think that advertisement is so common so that we no longer pay attention to it. They are also right. Because now a days advertisement has become so popular. Their are many useless adds on social media that we see every day which are meaningless. So we should ignore these adds. They are only the wastage of time. Every local shop has made his add and posted it on social media which useless and and only waste time of people in seeing them. so we should ignore that type of adds.

In my opinion both types of people are correct because every person has its own thought and choice. I thought advertisement is good because t tells us about new things that came into market for sale. It also helps us a lo in shopping.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. For instance, the argument that advertising is 'helpful in shopping' is stated multiple times without providing specific examples or deeper analysis. The discussion on why people ignore advertisements is also somewhat superficial, focusing only on 'useless adds' rather than the psychological concept of ad-blindness. To improve, you should expand on your points with concrete examples or logical explanations, ensuring that each paragraph contributes something new to the discussion rather than restating the same idea in different words.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into three paragraphs, which is a logical structure. However, the progression of ideas within paragraphs is weak. Many sentences are short and choppy, and the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and repetitive. For example, the frequent use of 'By advertising' and 'It also' at the start of sentences makes the flow feel disjointed. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'that type of adds', which lacks a specific antecedent. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') to connect your ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, which restricts the quality of the argument. You frequently use basic terms like 'things', 'good', and 'important'. There are also consistent spelling errors, such as 'adds' instead of 'ads' and 'adverting' instead of 'advertising'. The word choice lacks the precision required for an academic essay. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more sophisticated vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'consumerism', 'marketing strategies', 'ubiquitous', or 'persuasive techniques', and ensure that you are using the correct terminology for the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Every local shop has made his add'), incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'people have not know'), and punctuation errors. The frequent misuse of articles and pluralisation also affects the clarity of your writing. To improve, practice constructing more complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions (e.g., 'although', 'because', 'which') and focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with verb forms and sentence boundaries.
