IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

ADVERTISING HAS BECOME A INTEGRAL PART OF OUR MODERN LIFE. WHILE SOME PEOPLE THINK THAT ITS HIGHLY EFFECTIVE IN CURRENT LIVES AND SOME PEOPLE THINK THAT ITS NOT WORTH IT. ALL OF THEM ARE REAL ON THEIR THOUGHTS BECAUSE EVERYONE HAVE THEIR OWN OPINIONS ABOUT ALL THE SITUATIONS.THIS ESSAY WILL DISCUSS BOTHE OF THEIRS OPINION DESPITE THE FACT THAT I AM GONNA GIVE MY OPINIONS AS WELL.

NOWDAYS, ADVERTISING WILL BECAME MORE MODERNISE BECAUSE EVERYONE LOVES TO WATCH NEW THINGS WITH NEW TRENDS.ADVERTISING WILL MAKE THE ITEM MORE REDABLE AND THEY MAKE IT LOOK LIKE ATTRACTIVE SO PEOPLE CAN REALLY GET CONNECT WITH THAT. PEOPLE GET EAGER TO KNOW ABOUT THAT PARTICULAR ITEM .LIKE KINDERJOY GIVES AD WITH CHILDEREN AND THEY ADDED LITTLE TOY IN THAT CHOCOLATE SO CHILDREN LOVE THAT AND THEY ALWAYS BUY THAT BECAUSE OF THEY MAKE IT MORE ATTRACTIVE BY ADVERTISING THEIR CHOCOLATES. SO ITS GIVES POSITIVE FEEDBACK AND GOOD MARKETING SKILLS ALWAYS NEED SOMETHING THAT CAN ESAILY ATTRACT CONSUMER TO BUY THEIR ITEMS.

ON THE OTHER HANDS, THERES NEGATIVE IMPACT AS WELL JUST LIKE WE SAID THAT ALL THE THINGS HAV ETHIR OWN PROS AND CONS AS WELL. AS AN EXAMPLE LAST WEEK IT WAS A RAKHI CELEBRATION IN INDIA. THERE'S ADVERTISE ON THE ALL NEWS AND ALL OVER SOCIAL MEDIA ABOUT BOLYYWOOD'S ACTRESS KRITI SANON'S LOOK AND OUTFIT SHE WORE IN THAT PARTICULAR AD. SHE WANTED TO GAVE A BEAUTIFUL MESSEGAE OF RAKHI TO ALL OF THEM BUT APPARENTLY THAT BECAME HUGE DEBATE ALL OVER SOCIAL MEDIA. EVERYONE HAVE THEIR OWN POINT OF VIEW AND CHOICES. APPARENTLY, PEOPLE DONT LIKE THAT BECAUSE SHE WORE REVALING CLOTHES AND ITS NOT SUITABLE FOR OCCASION LIKE RAKHI , AS PER SOCIETY.

IN MY OPINION , BOTH THINGS ARE CORRECT BECAUSE WITHOUT MARKETING THEIR ITEM CANT BE AT THE TOP OF THE RICH AND WITHOUT GOOD ADVERTISEMENT CUSTOMERS CANT GET INFO ABOUT THEM. I THINK ONE PROVERB SUMPS UP WITH THIS "ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD"

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both views, but the development is uneven. The first view (advertising as persuasive) is supported by a specific example of Kinder Joy, which is relevant. However, the second view (advertising is ignored) is not clearly addressed; instead, the student discusses a controversy regarding a celebrity advertisement. This does not directly support the idea that people 'no longer pay attention' to ads. The position is stated, but the arguments lack depth and the conclusion is somewhat disconnected from the prompt. To improve, ensure each paragraph directly addresses the specific claim made in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. While transition phrases like 'On the other hand' are used, the internal flow of ideas is often disjointed. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the transition between the general concept of advertising and the specific example of Kinder Joy is abrupt. Additionally, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, which hinders the smooth flow of the argument. Better use of linking words to connect sentences and ideas would improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'redable' (readable/recognizable), 'modernise' (modernized), and 'messegae' (message). The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles to use more sophisticated or precise language to convey complex ideas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of variety and the presence of spelling errors restrict the score. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on learning topic-specific collocations and improving spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement ('everyone have', 'advertising will became'), incorrect verb tenses, and punctuation issues. There is a limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences often result in errors that can cause some difficulty for the reader. For example, 'ALL OF THEM ARE REAL ON THEIR THOUGHTS' is grammatically incorrect and unclear. The frequent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction significantly impact the clarity of the writing.
