IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

NOWADAYS SOME INDIVIUALS THINKS ADVERTISING THINGS ONLINE ARE MORE EASIEST TO BUY, WHILE SOME THOUGHT IT IS JUST A WASTE OF TIME AND HAVE NOT INTEREST IN IT.

BUT IT IS SOMEHOW USEFUL TO BUY THINGS ONLINE FROM SEEING THINGS IN ADS.

THE PEOPLE WHO THINKS IT IS SUCCESSFUL TO BUY THINGS BECAUSE WE CAN GET STUFF SITTING AT HOME THEY THOUGHT GOING OUT IS SUCH A HASSEL WE CAN GET THINGS HOME EASILY, THEY WANT ANYTHING WHILE SCOLLING THEY WILL GET AN ADVERTISEMENT OF THAT THING THEY CAN SURELY GET THAT FROM THAT AD QUICKLY. FOR EXAMPLE IF THEY HAD SHORTAGE OF GROCERY AND NO ONE IS AVAILABLE AT HOME THEY CAN GET FROM ONLINE WEBSITE EASILY AND GOT THAT IN FEW MINTS OR HOURS EAILY AT HOME.

WHILE OTHER THINKS IT IS JUST A WASTE OF TIME, ITS A SCAM THEY DO NOT PAY ATTENTION ON THE ADVERTISTMENTS BEACUSE THEY THOUGHT THEY WILL GET THAT THESE THINGS FROM SHOP EASILY. THEY THOUGHT IF THEY ORDER THAT THING AND NOT GET THE SAME THING ON THIS POINT THEY DO NOT PAY ATTENTION ON IT AND SHOWS NO INTEREST AS WELL. FOR INSTANT, THEY ORDER A THING THEY CANNOT GET THE SAME WHICH THEY ORDER THEY GET DISTRACT FROM THAT THING AND NEXT TIME THEY AUTOMATICALLY DO SHOW ANY TYPE OF INTEREST IN IT.

IN MY OPINION,I PREFER SHOPPING ONLINE EITHER I SAW ADVERTISMENT OR I SAW ON BILL BOARDS ITS BECAUSE ITS CONVINENT EASY TO BUY WHILE SITTING AT HOME THERE IS NO SPECIAL NEED TO GO AT SHOPS FOR BUYING I PERFER THIS TO BECAUSE WITH FACILITIES WITH DO HAVE THE OPTION TO EXCHANGE THAT WHILE SITTING HOME.

TO SUM UP ALL THE INFORMATION, SOME PEOPLE DO PREFER AND SOME ARE NOT PREFERING IN DEPNEDS ON THE MINDSET OF EVERYBODY, IN MY PERSPECTIVE I STRONGLY PREFER ON SOME EXTENT OF BUYING ONLINE. IT VARIES ON THE OPINION OF EVERYBODY.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. The arguments regarding why people find advertising successful or why they ignore it are somewhat superficial and lack depth. For instance, the discussion on why people ignore ads focuses heavily on the fear of scams rather than the broader concept of 'ad blindness' or saturation. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments are not fully extended, leading to a score in the lower range.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is very limited and often mechanical. Transitions between sentences are frequently missing or repetitive, such as the constant use of 'they thought' or 'they can'. The logical flow is hindered by the lack of sophisticated linking words. While the overall progression is discernible, the lack of variety in cohesive devices makes the writing feel disjointed and repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits the ability to express complex ideas. There are several instances of word-choice errors and non-standard collocations, such as 'scolling' (scrolling), 'hassel' (hassle), and 'for instant' (for instance). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate a higher level of proficiency, as the same words are recycled throughout the text. To improve, you should focus on learning synonyms and more precise academic terminology related to consumer behaviour and marketing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'some individuals thinks', 'other thinks') and sentence structure, including many run-on sentences and comma splices. The range of grammatical structures is limited, relying mostly on simple sentences. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevents the essay from reaching a higher band score.
