IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is frequently claimed that advertisements are greatly successful when it comes to consumer persuasion, while others arue that they are substantially prevalent, resulting in reduced attention from consumers. This essay will discuss both perspectives before providing my own opinion.
The idea of advertisments is to creatively attract customers and convince them into buying a service or a product. Although successful advertising represents sales growth, in a deeper aspect it mirrors the consumers' needs and wants, through which businesses often succeed in compeling the customers. The chances of businesses being successful through advertising, is significantly based on the viewers' and the customers' requirements. For example, if a person is interested in purchasing a computer, and a website has great advertising, is attractive, appealing and convincing, it would be successful in easily driving this person towards buying the computer, as per their need.
Nevertheless, as there are several adverts that do not benefit certain viewers, there are high chances of immediate rejection and inconsideration towards those. As advertising becomes progressively more niche and larger in volume, the customer attraction essentially depletes. Although many advertisements may seem overstimulating to some people, the primary motive behind them easily persuading and convincing is people's needs and wants.
In conclusion, although advertisements large in volume can introduce overstimulation and consequent rejection, the greater purpose relies on its creativity and innovativeness that persuades the person to purchase. At last, the chances of advertisements purely convincing customers, and succeeding into selling a product or service is significantly reliant on the customer's genuine requirements. For the abovementioned factors, I would say that advertisments are greatly successful at persuading us to purchase.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear position. The ideas are relevant, particularly the link between consumer needs and advertising effectiveness. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; the argument that advertising succeeds because it aligns with 'needs and wants' is restated multiple times without significant new evidence or deeper analysis. To reach a higher band, you should provide more varied examples or explore the counter-argument regarding 'overstimulation' with more specific detail rather than general assertions. The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of exploration is limited.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two perspectives. Cohesive devices such as 'Nevertheless', 'Although', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the flow within paragraphs is occasionally slightly mechanical, and some transitions between sentences feel repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better contrast the two viewpoints. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'overstimulating', 'niche', and 'compelling'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'inconsideration towards those' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'succeeding into selling' (should be 'succeeding in selling'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and the repetition of phrases like 'needs and wants' suggests a need for more varied synonyms to express these concepts more fluently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several instances of minor grammatical errors, such as 'advertisments' (spelling), 'arue' (spelling), and 'The chances of businesses being successful... is' (subject-verb agreement error, as 'chances' is plural). Punctuation is generally accurate, but some sentences are slightly clunky. While complex structures are attempted, the frequency of error-free sentences is not high enough for a band 8. The errors do not impede communication, but they are noticeable enough to prevent a higher score.
