IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In contemporary society, advertising debate has become an increasingly prevalent phenomenon. While a segment of people claim that it has led to a higher impact on society, others strongly oppose this notion. In this essay, I will look at both sides of the argument and draw a conclusion.
To commence with, some people think that marketing strategy helps individuals to buy more things. Because people nowadays are not being aware of trending fashions, which are currently going on, so companies' publications about the articles help people to persuade significantly to purchase items. To cite an example, due to hectic and busy schedules of individuals, the advertising on billboards or online platforms encourages them visit the shops. Moreover, sometimes brands offer huge discounts on their respective articles by displaying on different social media websites. Hence, it provides society with valuable information about different items.
On the other hand, others believe that these types of strategies have no significant value in our society due to their prevalence. Owing to this, they only earn revenues with the help of these techniques that people are not paying attention towards. For instance, the sheer number of promotions overwhelms consumers, causing them to ignore valuable offers. Therefore, it makes employees face severe downfall in their idea.
Furthermore, from my perspective, I think that businessmen should have to launch their products, which are beneficial and more attractive to customers. It is a fact that significant amount of publicity will make the market down and it will make the people less attracted towards it. Consequently, only those important things should be made popular that make an eye catching to the society.
To sum up, regular basic advertising is not an ideal strategy, according to the entrepreneurs. So, once in a blue moon, an organization ought to launch a new innovation that boosts the selling demand of the businesses, and wider number public will avail these products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The first body paragraph provides relevant reasons for advertising's success, but the second paragraph regarding the 'no attention' view is less clearly articulated, particularly the phrase 'employees face severe downfall in their idea,' which is vague and lacks logical connection to the topic. The personal opinion is present but could be more clearly integrated into the overall argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explained with clear, logical links to the prompt's core question rather than relying on general statements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Consequently.' However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as the transition 'Therefore, it makes employees face severe downfall in their idea.' Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, making the progression of ideas feel slightly disjointed in the latter half of the essay. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that pronouns and linking words refer clearly to previous concepts will enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations, such as 'contemporary society' and 'hectic and busy schedules.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'advertising debate has become an increasingly prevalent phenomenon' and 'make the market down.' The phrase 'once in a blue moon' is an idiom, but it is used somewhat inappropriately in this formal context. Expanding the range of vocabulary and focusing on more precise collocations would improve the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'people nowadays are not being aware of,' 'advertising on billboards... encourages them visit the shops' (missing 'to'), and 'businessmen should have to launch.' Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure occasionally feels repetitive or slightly forced. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater grammatical precision.
