IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

A company launch a new product for more attentions or seek good reach they advertise their product in different ways.

I believe advertising play a very importent role for a company to boost their demands. For instance a new arrival in a market and many peoples do not know about that product, they do not purchase products untill they don't have any idea.

Furthermore, a shop have sale is upto 50% if they do not make flyers or not tell the customers about the sale,

how their products are shopping by people.

Hence marketers advertise their products in different kinds like a poster, ads in mobile phone or on the Tv, also bilboards play a significant role to show a product.

On the other hand, some people think that advertising is not neccessary. In my opinion most people use mobile phones and they have curisoty to see the next episode so if a ad show in the drama or in the other stories they just skip them, and frustrated from too much ads. So in this way they do no take interest in ads.

Last days i was scrolling on the mobile phone, an ad is going through my sight i just ignore and scroll next but in my mind a shampoo remain surrounded so i go to the first page and search that add about dandruff in head. So i go on the page and order for that shampoo in this way it was very beneficial for me.

To sum up advertising is much necessary for exploring new things.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the task. However, the development of ideas is limited. The arguments are somewhat simplistic and rely heavily on personal anecdotes rather than broader analysis. For example, the explanation of why people ignore ads is quite brief, and the counter-argument regarding the shampoo purchase is anecdotal rather than analytical. To achieve a higher band, you should expand on the societal or economic implications of advertising rather than focusing solely on personal experiences. The position is clear, but the overall depth of the discussion is insufficient for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'Hence marketers' and 'In my opinion' are used, but the transitions between sentences are sometimes abrupt. For instance, the jump from discussing mobile phone ads to the personal shampoo anecdote lacks a smooth logical bridge. Additionally, there is some repetition of ideas, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'how their products are shopping by people', which makes the logical flow difficult to follow at times.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and often repetitive. You use basic terms like 'good reach', 'new arrival', and 'things' to describe complex concepts. There are also several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'how their products are shopping by people' (instead of 'being purchased') and 'an ad is going through my sight' (instead of 'appeared on my screen'). While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of precision and the reliance on simple, sometimes incorrect, phrasing prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. You need to focus on using more academic collocations and precise terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement ('A company launch', 'advertising play'), article usage, and sentence structure ('a shop have sale is upto 50%'). Complex sentence structures are attempted but are often faulty, leading to confusion. For example, 'they do not purchase products untill they don't have any idea' is grammatically awkward. While simple sentences are generally understandable, the lack of control over more complex structures and the persistent errors in basic grammar significantly limit the score in this criterion.
