IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are two different school of thoughts regarding the advertisements. Some people say that advertising is successful as it persuades us to buy things while others have a different opinion. Other people think that we no longer pay attention to it. In my opinion, advertising do affect us. Adverrtising do have an affect on people. For example: a new product is introduced into the market. The only way to let people know about this is through advertisements. Advertisement will not only introduce a new product into market but also shows how to use it. People will definitley attracted to it. Recently, i saw an ad about washing clothes, in which company has intoduced a new product (washing balls) to replace the detergents. I found it quite helpful and i replaced the detergent with these balls. So, adevertisement persuaded me into buying this. But advertisements cannot always have an affect on people. These days advertisng is so common that people no longer pay attention to it. For example, there are many products that are in the market for ages. when these products are advertised , people don,t pay attention to them beacause people have seen them. As a result , advertisng such product won't have any effect on people's descion making. In conclusion, advertising can persuade people into buying a certain product, if there is some innovation about it. Otherwise, a product which has been in use for ages, advertising won't be helpful for such product as people are already familiar with it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both viewpoints and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide a personal example regarding washing balls, the discussion on why people ignore advertisements is quite brief and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the psychological or societal reasons why advertising effectiveness diminishes over time, rather than just stating that people have seen the products before. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, restating the points made in the body paragraphs without adding a final synthesis or broader perspective.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite mechanical and limited. You rely heavily on simple transitions like 'For example' and 'In conclusion'. There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect ideas within and between sentences. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow between the introduction and the first body paragraph is abrupt. Improving the variety of your cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between your arguments would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use basic terms like 'helpful' and 'different opinion' repeatedly. There are also several spelling errors, such as 'Adverrtising', 'definitley', and 'descion', which indicate a lack of attention to detail. While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'innovation' and 'detergents', the overall lexical range is narrow. To improve, focus on using more precise synonyms and collocations, and ensure you proofread your work to eliminate basic spelling mistakes that distract the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'advertising do affect us', 'company has intoduced'), missing articles, and incorrect punctuation, such as the comma usage in 'don,t' and 'descion making.'. The sentence structure is often repetitive, and the lack of control over basic grammar rules, such as pluralisation and verb tense consistency, is noticeable. You need to focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common grammatical slips to improve your accuracy.
