IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Advertisement is undoubtedly of much significance when it comes to companies to gain people's interest towards their products or make awareness regarding their new launches. Effective advertisement techniques are immensely important to create the desire of purchase in consumer's mind. Many multinational companies invest equally in advertisement as their production because they know this factor hold significant importance to their profitability. People are likely to buy more of those products when they perceive the need of it in their life and this is what is exactly targeted through advertisements. For instance, Nestle is a multinational corporation spending billions of dollars on its commercialization to let people know how they prefer human health should not be compromised and the quality on which they guarantee. There slogan "Good food, Good life" guarantees zero compromise on human health.

As social media is commonly being used all over the world and the vision of brands is also getting clear and unfiltered among the world, the people have become conscious regarding their needs and wants and how the brands are trying to mold buyers' perspectives and persuade them to buy what they aren't really in need of. Company such as Zara is globally recognized and people purchase them according to their tastes and preference but as the brand is known by all, they are aware of the advertisements the company uses to shape the needs of customers.

In my opinion, brands should not play with people's mind for their company's profitability and brand recognition.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views regarding the effectiveness of advertising and the idea that it is ignored. However, the development is uneven. The first paragraph discusses the importance of advertising, but the second paragraph is somewhat tangential, focusing more on consumer consciousness than the specific prompt about advertising being 'so common that we no longer pay attention to it.' Furthermore, the conclusion is very brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments. Crucially, the response is 249 words, failing the 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length impacts the depth of the discussion, leading to a penalty in Task Achievement as the ideas are not fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into three paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed. While there is an attempt to use cohesive devices, they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately, such as the transition into the second paragraph. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the link between brand recognition and the 'ignored' aspect of advertising is not explicitly stated. Paragraphing is present, but the final paragraph is underdeveloped, which disrupts the overall logical flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. There are several instances of awkward phrasing or imprecise word choices, such as 'make awareness regarding their new launches' (should be 'raise awareness') and 'commercialization' (when 'advertising' or 'marketing' would be more accurate). The phrase 'hold significant importance' is acceptable, but the overall lexical control is limited. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general meaning, it does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'Advertisement is undoubtedly of much significance when it comes to companies to gain people's interest' (awkward structure), 'this factor hold significant importance' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'Company such as Zara' (missing article). Punctuation is generally functional, but the errors in grammar are noticeable and occur throughout the text. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
