IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that goods marketing is still powerful to influence people to buy their products, while others believe that it is quite usual that many individuals often ignore it. I believe that many individuals now ignore advertisements because they are highly aware of marketing effects and how companies over-exaggerate their goods.
On the one hand, some argue that advertising remains extremely successful at persuading consumers, many companies use targeted algorithms and psychological triggers to create a desire for products. Nowadays, social media has become the most famous marketing platform to influence people, and they pick most famous celebrity to gain public's trust, as influencers successfully driving instant sales for fashion brands. However, I disagree that this remains effective for the majority of modern consumers.
On the other hand, others believe that advertising has become so commonplace that it is largely ignored. Consumers are heavily exposed to marketing and easily recognize when companies over exaggerate their goods. Most of the product's true nature is hidden from the consumers, which leads to distrust among them and they tend to skip advertisement. For instance, the widespread use of ad-blocking software or immediately skipping internet videos ads. While the social media has become the marketing platform for such companies for their benefits, many people on Instagram help to reveal the true identity of the nature. strongly agree with this perspective because consumers awareness has outplaced traditional marketing tricks.
In conclusion, although some marketing campaigns can still successfully persuade consumers, I firmly believe that the vast majority of individuals now ignore them because they are highly aware of companies over-exaggerate their goods.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal position. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat uneven. For instance, the argument regarding influencers is a strong point, but the explanation of why consumers ignore ads could be more deeply explored beyond just mentioning ad-blockers. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with more detailed reasoning or specific examples to avoid over-generalization.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the vague use of 'they' in the second paragraph when referring to companies or influencers. Overall, the flow of ideas is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'targeted algorithms', 'psychological triggers', and 'ad-blocking software'. However, there are some repetitive word choices and minor collocation errors, such as 'goods marketing' instead of 'product marketing' or 'advertising' and 'over-exaggerate' (which is redundant as 'exaggerate' already implies 'over'). Expanding your range of synonyms and refining your use of collocations would help elevate the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'they pick most famous celebrity' lacks an article and pluralization, and 'influencers successfully driving' should be 'influencers successfully drive'. Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and sentence fragments, such as 'strongly agree with this perspective' missing a subject. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will improve your score in this criterion.
