Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay attempts to address both views, the discussion is superficial and lacks depth. The conclusion is missing, and the essay ends abruptly mid-sentence, meaning the writer's own opinion is not clearly stated or developed as required by the prompt. The content focuses more on the pros and cons of online shopping rather than the specific debate regarding the effectiveness of advertising itself, leading to a lack of focus on the core task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore', they are often used mechanically or inappropriately. The abrupt ending prevents a coherent conclusion, and the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the transition between the two views in the introduction. The overall structure is incomplete, which hinders the flow of ideas and makes the argument difficult to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic terms like 'good', 'bad', and 'things', which lack the precision required for an academic essay. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'online goods' instead of 'online shopping' or 'e-commerce', and 'bad affect' instead of 'negative effect'. The range is insufficient to express complex ideas, and the lack of variety in word choice makes the writing feel simplistic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but these are frequently marred by grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('Individuals has', 'it take'), incorrect preposition usage ('pay attention on it'), and awkward phrasing ('In the other way'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the incomplete nature of the final sentence highlights a lack of control over sentence structure. Frequent errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the intended meaning.
