IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are a group of people that tend to beleive that in order to persuade us in buying a product, advertising plays a major role. On the other hand, other group of people say that the advertising is so common that no one pays attention to it anymore while buying a product. While, I beleive that advertising is really important if one wants to persuade an audience.

In recent times of social media many people are getting influenced in buying certain things due to new trends that are coming in the market. An influencer or vlogger posts a pic with a product or uses something, the commoner's go and buy it in order to either look cool or fit in. In this age of digital world, advertising a product plays a major in role in the success of a product. If one launches a product without grabbing the attention of people, only a few people that come across the product might buy it some will not even bother looking at it, while if something is greatly advertised people get persuaded to buy it even before the launch. Advertising also helps understanding the product.

There are ways to advertise things if someone does not find an attractive way to advertise and uses something very generic people will pay no attention and will think about it as a common thing. Through advertising one not only introduces but also makes an audience.

There are some people that might think that poeple no longer pay attention, they are not entirly wrong generic advertisements can no longer persuade people, but the ways of advertisiments have changed and they still grab people's attention, we are so busy in our daily life to notice the small changes but if payed attention they will realise that the affect is still there but they ways has changed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising—its persuasiveness versus its ubiquity leading to indifference—and provides a personal opinion in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on social media influencers is relevant, but the arguments regarding how generic advertising is ignored lack depth and extension. The stance is stated but remains simplistic. While the main prompt requirements are covered, the overall development corresponds closely to Band 6 descriptors where relevant ideas are presented, but some are under-developed or lack full elaboration. There are no major task omissions, but the arguments would benefit from greater specific examples and more rigorous extension.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance and recognisable paragraph structure, though paragraphing is somewhat irregular, with a very short third paragraph consisting of only two sentences. Cohesive devices are attempted, but referencing and linking are occasionally mechanical or faulty, such as 'While, I beleive' and abrupt transitions between paragraphs. The progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by loose connections between sentences, for instance in the final paragraph where multiple ideas are crowded together without sufficient signposting. Paragraphing is used, but not always appropriately or logically balanced. Overall, the organizational features are adequate for a Band 6 score, showing an identifiable structure despite mechanical and sometimes inadequate cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'ubiquity' (implied), 'influence', and 'generic advertisements'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'beleive' instead of 'believe', 'other group' instead of 'another group', 'in buying' instead of 'to buy', 'commoner's' instead of 'commoners', 'play a major in role' (collaboration error), and 'entirly' instead of 'entirely'. These vocabulary errors and spelling slips indicate a Band 6 level, where the range is sufficient to communicate the central message, but frequent minor lexical and orthographic inaccuracies prevent access to higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('If one launches a product without grabbing the attention...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, including run-on sentences and comma splices, particularly in the final paragraph ('...we are so busy in our daily life to notice the small changes but if payed attention they will realise that the affect is still there but they ways has changed'). Other errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('the affect is still there', 'they ways has changed') and misspelling/misuse of words ('payed' instead of 'paid', 'affect' instead of 'effect'). These persistent errors occasionally impede smooth reading and place the grammar firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
