IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Alought, some people believes that advertises attract them to buy goods but other not.I'm going partically with this statement .I will discuss about both sides in upcoming paragraphs.

To begin with , some individuals thinks that advertise encourage people to buy products because , nowadays most of people like to use social media and they consider some of actress and singer or social media people to their rule modle. So ,when they saw them in advertisement to use any product that thing attract them to buy same thing to look same like their role modles. Moreover, sometimes people watch any adds on posters,by social media and they think its too much known brand and they try to use those things that everywhere in ads .so they attract by adds and buy goods. For example,a face cream advertisement is everywhere on nrewspaper ,tv ,social media and people thinks that ohh its too much viral product ,we have to use it to look m ore nice and they buy it.

On the other side, rest of people thought, advertises don't have any value in their life because ,they know what they need to use and already what they are using.Second, they believes that ads are fake sometimes .To explain it,for example,in add of mountain duo they shows , a singer drink that soft drink and then fly with bike on mountain .Therfore people knows that ,every advertisement is not real and they don't have to trust on them and not need to buy products.

In conculsion, acclording to me ,some advertisements are good and real and they put impact on people to encourage them buy things but some look fake and they don't have any persuading on us to buy products

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that advertising is persuasive and that it is too common to be noticed or valued—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on role models is underdeveloped, relying on general assertions rather than extended analysis. The arguments tend to over-generalise, such as assuming all people follow social media celebrities blindly or universally dismiss ads as fake. Nevertheless, the main task requirements are met, and the overall stance is clear throughout. This aligns closely with Band 5.0 descriptors, where the task is addressed, but ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is divided into appropriate paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs representing different views, and a conclusion. However, overall progression is hindered by frequent mechanical and faulty cohesive devices, such as starting sentences with 'To begin with ,', 'Moreover,', and 'Second,'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and punctuation errors around commas and spaces disrupt the flow. While there is a basic logical structure separating the two viewpoints, the cohesive devices are often inadequate or repetitive. This matches the Band 5.0 descriptors, which note some organisation and use of cohesive devices, but with noticeable mechanical flaws and lack of smooth progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and basic, with frequent spelling errors such as 'Alought' for 'Although', 'partically' for 'partially', 'modle' for 'model', 'nrewspaper' for 'newspaper', 'm ore' for 'more', and 'conculsion' for 'conclusion'. There are also awkward word choices, such as 'too much known brand' and 'viral product'. The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate to communicate the basic ideas, but noticeable errors in spelling and word formation cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band. This is characteristic of Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('some people believes', 'individuals thinks', 'people watch... and they think'), incorrect prepositions ('on social media' versus 'by social media'), and missing articles. Sentence structures are often strained or run-on, leading to frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. While some basic structures are accurate, the high density of grammatical inaccuracies places this response firmly at Band 4.5 or 5.0. Given that communication is maintained despite the errors, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
