IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Advertising plays a significant role in modern society, influencing the products and services consumers choose to purchase. While, some people believe that advertisements play a successful role in persuading consumers to buy things.Others argue that advertisment is so widespread nowadays, people pay least attention to it. This essay will discuss both views along with my opinion.
On the one hand, advertisment is playing an important role in encouraging people to buy products. Most of the multi-national companies are highly paying to create attractive advertisments for their products to appeal consumer's desires and emotions. For example, advertisments of cars are mostly linked with success, freedom and social status rather than discussing its features. In addition, adverstisments through bill-boards and smds allow people to be aware of the discounts available on the desired brands. It helps in attracting a lot of public attention.
On the other hand, most of the social media apps nowadays are overcrowded with advertisments which consequently leads to lesser public attention. I agree with the fact that advertisments play a essential role in brands marketing and growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both views required by the prompt, discussing both the perspective that advertising is successful at persuading buyers and the counter-argument that people ignore it due to its sheer ubiquity. The student also briefly introduces their own opinion. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed due to the brevity of the response. Crucially, the length requirement of at least 250 words is not met, as the text contains only 174 words. This severely impacts the overall fulfillment of the task, preventing a thorough extension of ideas as expected for higher band scores. Consequently, the score reflects this incomplete development and failure to meet the minimum length threshold.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates some basic organization, utilizing an introductory paragraph, a body paragraph discussing both sides, and a concluding remark. However, the logical progression is hindered by abrupt transitions and underdeveloped paragraphs. Paragraphing is not fully utilized, as the main body block mashes multiple points together rather than clearly separating the contrasting views into distinct paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes awkwardly, such as 'While, some people believe...' with inappropriate punctuation. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall structural cohesion remains faulty and mechanical. This performance aligns closely with the descriptors for Band 5, where organization is present but lacks clear overall progression and adequate cohesive control.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'multi-national companies', 'social status', and 'social media apps'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that detract from the writing, such as 'advertisment' (misspelled consistently), 'pay least attention' instead of 'pay little attention', and 'highly paying' instead of 'paying heavily'. Less common lexical items are attempted but occasionally used with inaccuracy. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5, reflecting a limited yet minimally adequate range with noticeable inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence forms, such as 'While, some people believe that advertisements play a successful role...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring persistent errors including punctuation mistakes ('While, some people...'), article omissions, and awkward verb phrasing like 'are mostly linked with' or 'is playing an important role'. Attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty. While the meaning remains generally understandable despite these errors, the high frequency of inaccurate structures places this submission squarely at Band 5, where frequent errors in grammar cause some difficulty and prevent fluent reading.
