IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often debated whether modern advertising remains a powerful tool for shaping consumer behaviour or if its omnipresence has rendered it ineffective. While advertising has become so ubiquitious that many people consiously tune it out, I believe that sophisticate marketing tchniques still exert a profound influence over consumer purchasing decisions.
On the one hand, a growing segment of the population has developed a degree of immunity to marketing campaigns. Because individuals are bombarded daily with hundreds of commercial message across digital media, television and public space, a phonomenon know as " ad fatigue" has set in. Consequently, consumers actively avoid promotional content by using ad blockers online skipping commercial, or simply or ignoring bilboards. Moreover, modern consumers tend to be more skeptical and informed, they often rely on independent customer reviews, word of mouth reccomendations, and direct comaprison sites rather than taking brand advertisements at face value.
On the other hand, contemporary advertising relies heavily on advanced psychology and targeted data, making it remarkbly effective at driving sales. Rather than mearly broadcasting produts, modern campaigns craft compelling narratives that targets lifestyle aspirations, social status and personal identity. Furthermore digital advertisng utilising algorithm driven personalization to display relevant items based on a user specific search history and online behaviour.
In conclusion, Although the sheer volume of advertisement leads many people to ignore standard promotional content, strategic and personalisation marketing strategies remain exceptionally successfull. In my view, as long as advertisng continues to evolve psychologically and technologically, it will retain its power to shape consumer habbits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising—its persuasiveness versus its declining attention—and clearly states their own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. For example, the writer notes that 'a growing segment of the population has developed a degree of immunity' while counterbalancing this with the view that 'contemporary advertising relies heavily on advanced psychology and targeted data.' The ideas are well extended and supported with relevant examples like 'ad blockers online' and 'algorithm driven personalization.' The position is clear throughout the response, meeting the requirements for a Band 7 descriptor by presenting a well-developed argument with sufficient extension of ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with a clear introduction, moving through opposing viewpoints in body paragraphs one and two, and culminating in a definitive conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion,' which guide the reader smoothly through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing is generally clear. However, there are minor cohesive lapses, such as a run-on sentence in the second paragraph ('Moreover, modern consumers tend to be more skeptical and informed, they often rely on...'), which prevents the score from reaching the higher bands. Overall, cohesion is effective and logical.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task. Phrases like 'omnipresence,' 'profound influence,' 'ad fatigue,' and 'lifestyle aspirations' indicate an attempt to use less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation. However, there are several spelling and typographical errors throughout the text, including 'ubiquitious' (ubiquitous), 'consiously' (consciously), 'sophisticate' (sophisticated), 'tchniques' (techniques), 'bilboards' (billboards), 'reccomendations' (recommendations), 'comaprison' (comparison), 'mearly' (merely), 'produts' (products), 'advertisng' (advertising), 'utilising' (utilising), 'advertisement' (advertisements), and 'successfull' (successful). These errors show occasional lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips, placing the response firmly at Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 due to the frequency of surface-level slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'While advertising has become so ubiquitious that many people consiously tune it out, I believe that...' and 'Rather than mearly broadcasting produts, modern campaigns craft compelling narratives...'. However, there are noticeable grammatical and punctuation errors that recur throughout the text, such as comma splices ('Moreover, modern consumers tend to be more skeptical and informed, they often rely on...') and missing articles or pluralisation issues (e.g., 'commercial message' instead of 'commercial messages', 'skipping commercial' instead of 'skipping commercials'). Furthermore, verbs are occasionally misused, such as 'that targets' instead of 'that target'. These errors demonstrate that while complex structures are attempted, they are not always fully controlled.
