IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In current societal landscape, individuals often alleged that advertisements are extremely useful at persuing us to buy products. However, others opine that masses not pay much attention towards advertisements because they are common nowdays. This essay will compare both approaches and I side with former view.
On one hand people favor it because they believe advertising put emphasising impact on indidvidual mind. One reason for that by seeing a brand often people prefer to take it over new product this happens mainly due to social status. With the help of various sources companies tries to show products that person has already searched for . Furthermore, they add pretty effects and sound which particularly makes the advertisement attractive.
On other hand, It is believe that now people donot pay much attention towards advertisements because people are fed up from the banners and avoid to much thinking regarding to buy products. Nowdays, there are so many websites and apps that run commercial advertisement which irritate individuals due to which they donot prefer to buy products from that particular sites. Let us take specially tamil nadu for instance, that government announced that phamplets and banners are banned because they increase waste and make walls untidy.
To sum up, the I agree with former perspective because advertisements help people to get branded products. While both sides have solid points, the argument that advertisements helps to buy new products is more overpowering than other side.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising effectiveness and stating a clear personal opinion. However, there are significant limitations. Crucially, the response falls short of the minimum word count requirement, containing only 240 words instead of the mandated 250, which requires a penalty under Task Achievement. While the ideas are relevant, some development is limited and slightly confused, such as the sudden, localized example regarding Tamil Nadu. The writer's position is discernible, but the overall development remains somewhat basic and under-supported in places. Consequently, the score reflects these limitations in length and idea expansion, aligning with the Band 5 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing a clear attempt at paragraphing. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing sentence connections. Cohesive devices are often used inaccurately or mechanically, such as 'On one hand' paired with 'On other hand' (missing an article), and referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'this happens mainly due to social status' lacks a clear antecedent). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs suffers from repetitive phrasing and disjointed sentence structures. These issues place the response firmly in the Band 5 category for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with several noticeable errors in word choice and spelling that occasionally impede communication. For instance, the student writes 'persuing' instead of 'persuading', 'nowdays' instead of 'nowadays', and 'phamplets' instead of 'pamphlets'. Phrases like 'put emphasising impact' and 'more overpowering than other side' demonstrate awkward collocation and limited lexical precision. While there is a minimally adequate range of vocabulary to attempt the task, the high frequency of lexical errors and spelling mistakes restricts the score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences frequently result in major errors. Examples of severe grammatical inaccuracies include 'individuals often alleged that', 'masses not pay much attention', 'companies tries to show', and 'people are fed up from the banners and avoid to much thinking'. Punctuation and subject-verb agreement are weak throughout the text. These frequent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader and demonstrate poor control over basic and complex sentence forms, corresponding to a Band 4.5 or rounded to Band 5.
