IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Advertising is a major part of our daily lives. We see ads on television, social media, websites, buses and even on our phones. Some people believes that advertising is very effective because it persuades people to buy more products, While other thinks that there are so many advertisements nowadays that people simply ignore them. I believe that advertising still has important influence on what people buy.
On the one hand, advertisements can strongly affect people's buying decisions. Companies usually make their ads attractive and memorable by using famous people, intresting vidoes, music or special offers. For example, when a popular celebrity promotes a particular bard of clothing or a phone, their fans may become interested in buying the same product. Advertising can also introduce people to products they did not know about before. In this way, it can create a desire for something that people may not have originally planned to purchase.
On the other hand, people are exposed to advertisements almost everywhere, so many of them have become used to ignoring them. when watching videos online, for instance, people often skip the ads as soon as they can. Similary, social media users may scroll past advertisements without even reading them. Some people are also aware that ads are designed to make products look more better than they really are, so they may not trust them completely.
In my opinion, although people often ignore advertisements, they are still effective in influencing consumers. Even when we do not pay close attention, seeing the same brand repeatedly can make it more familiar to us. Later, when we need a product, we may choose a bran that we have seen many times before.
In conclusion, advertising is sometimes ignored because it is so common, but it continues to influence people's choices. Therefore, i believe that advertising remains an effective easy of affecting consumer behaviour

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising and providing a clear personal position throughout the essay. The first view is illustrated with examples like celebrities and special offers, while the counter-view is supported by actions such as skipping online ads and scrolling past social media content. The student's own opinion is clearly stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Ideas are adequately extended and supported, fitting well within the Band 7 descriptor for Task Achievement. The response covers all required elements of the prompt effectively without any major omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to the first view, the second view, the personal opinion, and finally the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'In my opinion', and 'For example' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately. However, minor mechanical errors in punctuation and referencing slightly prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Overall, the structural flow is strong and logical, fully satisfying the requirements of Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, using terms like 'persuading', 'consumer behaviour', 'promotes', and 'familiar'. There are occasional spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'intresting vidoes', 'bard' instead of 'brand', 'more better', and 'easy' instead of 'way'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the lexical resource is adequate for the task and allows the writer to convey their ideas clearly, placing the response firmly at Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over conditional and subordinate clauses like 'Even when we do not pay close attention, seeing the same brand repeatedly can make it more familiar to us.' There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Some people believes', 'other thinks'), uncapitalised pronouns ('i believe'), and missing periods at the ends of sentences. However, these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the writer's meaning, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.
