IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Advertising is an important part of modern life, and some people believe taht it is extremely successful in persuading to buy things. However, some people believe that the advertising has little impact on people. We will discuss both the views.

On the one hand, advertisement can have significant impact on some people.Advertising companies use attractive images, celebrity endorsement, emotional mesages which do influence people to buy things.Advertisement companies mainly target younger age group and elderly people ,knowing the fact that age bracket which they are targetting is less aware about the authenticity of it as comapred to the people who are rational buyers. For example,AI uses the prompt once you start scrolling about any product or just spend few seconds on a particular advertisement ,it will start giving you prompts of the similar product on your feed and might influence the people to purchase it.

On the other hand, some people believe that advertisement has little impact on the people.Consumer often makes decision on the basis price, quality and durability. For instance,if someone is satisfied with a particular brand of product will continue to buy it regardless the advertisement as it is tested by them. Moreover, the fequency of advertisements has increased so much that people tend to avoid watching it or remain ignorant towards it.Others find it worthless. Most of the people prefer buying products which are genuine and widely used by people and have a good reputation in the market.Nowadays, people do shopping not buy watching advertisement but by going with its reviews available on various online platforms.

I believe that advertisement has always played an eminent role either by the way it is being presentated or by the originality of the product. So it is up to the discretion of the people how much they get influenced by it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising and providing a personal opinion in the conclusion. Ideas are relevant and supported, such as mentioning targeted digital algorithms and consumer focus on price and quality. However, some arguments lack full extension, and the conclusion is relatively brief. The writer's position is clear throughout the essay. While the development of ideas could be deeper to reach higher band levels, all core elements of the task are adequately covered, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the constant use of 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. There are also referencing issues and occasional mechanical linking problems. Overall, the flow is acceptable and communication remains clear, fitting the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items like 'celebrity endorsement', 'authenticity', and 'discretion'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('taht', 'mesages', 'comapred', 'targetting', 'fequency', 'presentated') and word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'do shopping not buy watching' instead of 'by watching'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with complex structures attempted in sentences like 'Knowing the fact that age bracket which they are targetting is less aware...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors involving missing articles ('on the basis price', 'regardless the advertisement'), punctuation errors (spacing issues around commas), and minor structural slips. These errors occasionally cause slight strain for the reader but rarely impede overall communication, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
