Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views—that advertising is extremely successful at persuading buyers and that it is too common to be noticed—while also providing a clear personal position. The writer introduces their stance in the introduction, stating they believe advertising plays a great role in persuasion. However, the development of ideas lacks depth and sometimes repeats points about social media platforms and discounts without advancing the argument significantly. For instance, the discussion on how small businesses benefit from advertising is touched upon but remains slightly generalised. Furthermore, the counter-perspective that advertising is too common is somewhat conflated with budget issues and publicity campaigns rather than focusing purely on consumer indifference or fatigue. While all parts of the task are addressed, the ideas are occasionally repetitive or under-developed, placing this response firmly in Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a logical overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised, though some body paragraphs feel disjointed or repetitive in their structure. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To begin with', 'Equally important', 'However', and 'To conclude with', which help guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and transitions are at times mechanical or faulty, such as 'one of the hidden idea in the development of small businesses is advertisement' or abrupt shifts between sentences. The progression of ideas stumbles slightly because sentences within paragraphs sometimes circle back to the same points about social media and business success without maintaining a smooth forward trajectory. Overall organisation is coherent, but cohesion requires more precision.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including terms like 'commercialization', 'persuading consumers', and 'digital advertisement'. However, there are numerous spelling errors and inaccurate word choices throughout the text, such as 'adverstisement', 'benefecial', 'enhancemet', 'Additionaly', 'succesfull', 'intersted', 'heared', 'adversitment', 'belief', 'overecome', and 'carried out'. Many of these errors stem from basic spelling lapses or incorrect word forms (e.g., 'heared' instead of 'heard', 'belief' instead of 'believe'). While the vocabulary is adequate to communicate the writer's basic points, the frequency of lexical and spelling inaccuracies prevents the response from achieving a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses ('if there is some extra discount have been provided...'). However, grammatical accuracy is noticeably weak, featuring frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, tense usage, and article placement. Examples include 'advertisement have played' (plural/singular mismatch), 'if there is some extra discount have been provided' (grammatically tangled verb phrase), 'there some sort of publicity compaigns should be carried out' (missing auxiliary/verb), and 'that can help out to make you more success'. These errors frequently cause strain or awkwardness for the reader, though the core meaning remains mostly retrievable. The control over complex structures is inconsistent.
