IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
well both things are correct in their own sense as convinsing more to buy the product makes more but advertising is the main part of attracting the people . in first opinion the advertising make people convince more and make people more comfortable to buy and thats correct that now a days advertisement plays a hidden role that people would agrees to buy as per advertisement, it attracts in this way that it persuades the public and in second opinion the people take the advertising so common that they no longer pay attention to it but in real this may somehow right and wrong in some sense . it depends on the people need to pay attention to the ads , if the ads is relevent to the public interest the advertisement automatically persuades the public to buy according to their interest and if the ads are not according to the individual interest the people shall think that the advertising in common and they dont longer need to pay attention. in my opinion the advertising adds interest in the people and nowadays the ads decides what to buy and what to buy not . so its basically people own interest and ads quality to decide how to attract the public to make it attractive not much common . so i had discusse both views and both are correct according to the nature and situation . ads company makes the people interest more gloe that he onvinced to buy the product.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both views required by the prompt, discussing the idea that advertising successfully persuades buyers as well as the view that people ignore ads because they are too common. The writer also includes a personal opinion regarding relevance and consumer interest. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive, with arguments circling back on themselves without being fully extended or supported with concrete examples. Key terms are sometimes under-developed, falling short of higher-band requirements where ideas must be fully sustained and explored. Consequently, this performance aligns closely with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The text suffers from a major structural flaw: it is written entirely as a single, massive paragraph without any paragraph breaks. Although there is a discernible progression moving from the introduction of both views to personal opinion, the lack of paragraphing severely hinders the organisation. Furthermore, cohesive devices are weak, highly repetitive, and often inaccurate, such as 'in first opinion', 'in second opinion', and 'so i had discusse'. There is also a lack of clear referencing, making the logical flow difficult to follow at times. This corresponds to the Band 4 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing words like 'advertising', 'ads', 'public', 'interest', 'buy', and 'common'. There are numerous spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'convinsing' instead of convincing, 'relevent' instead of relevant, 'gloe' instead of glow, and 'onvinced' instead of convinced. While these errors and the limited range do not completely obscure the central meaning, they frequently strain the reader and reflect a restricted lexical repertoire, fitting the Band 4 descriptor profile.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on run-on sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions like 'and' or 'so'. Complex structures are attempted—for instance, 'if the ads is relevent to the public interest the advertisement automatically persuades'—but these attempts are frequently faulty and marked by subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'the ads is', 'the individual interest the people shall think'). Frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, and grammar cause considerable difficulty for the reader throughout, placing this response firmly in Band 4.
