IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Marketing of product is considered as the most significant way for building a good business. A group of individuals believe that advertisment are usually made in such a way that it convinced them to buy things, whereas other argues that nowadays people ignore the advertisment because it has become more common. The essay will discussed both the views of people along with my opinion in the ensuing paragraphs.
To commence with, advertisment done using most influential personality mostly grabs the attention of people and convinced them to buy things even if the things are not needed. For instance, advertisment done by famous sport person such as virat kohli, get successful outcomes, because people trust him and hence got influential to buy the thing the famous person promote. Another major reason is that endorsement usually play with emotion of a person. To elaborate, advertisment about the dream car or bike or anything that a person dream to buy long before, when see the promotion of same thing, make the person lean more toward the thing, subsequently the person left with no other option than to buy the product.
On the flip side, many time people do not give any significant importance to the advertisment. For example, while watching an important video or intense scene of movie, people usually hate to see any kind of advertisment, even if it is promoted by their role model. Moreover, people some time block the advertisment or take premium subscription to avoid the disturbance while watching or listening to media. Furthermore, many product which are promoted on online and social media are in low quality and fake, consequently it mitigate the trust on product among people.
To encapsulate, while many people still convinced to buy thing if they are promoted by elite personality or their favourite actors and actresses, I opine that before buying any product we should consult with the person who already have product, rather than trusting the advertisment blindly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising—its persuasiveness versus its ubiquity leading to avoidance—and clearly states the writer's own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas presented are relevant and supported with explanations, such as the use of celebrity endorsements and the annoyance of ads interrupting media. However, the development of ideas tends to be slightly repetitive, and the final opinion shifts to a somewhat tangential piece of advice about consulting peers rather than directly summarizing the prompt's debate. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptors well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction to the two opposing views and concluding with the writer's stance. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'To commence with', 'On the flip side', and 'To encapsulate'. However, some cohesive links and referencing are slightly mechanical or faulty, as seen in phrases like 'many time' or awkward phrasing in transitional sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but referencing within sentences occasionally lacks smooth flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'ubiquity' (implied), 'endorsement', and 'subsequently'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'advertisment' (repeatedly misspelled), 'convinced' instead of 'convince', 'sport person' instead of 'sports person', and 'mitigate the trust' instead of 'diminish trust'. These errors reflect a Band 5.0 to 6.0 range; while communication is generally clear and not impeded, lexical control is inconsistent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambitious structures like relative clauses and conditional-like constructions. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement and pluralisation, such as 'advertisment are usually made', 'people ... is', and missing articles ('the essay will discussed', 'famous sport person'). Punctuation and verb tense consistency also show weaknesses. These errors occasionally cause minor difficulty for the reader, aligning the grammar with a Band 5.0 level.
