IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In mordern era, few individuals belive that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy new products. while, other think that advertising is now unrealistic to pay attention.

On the one hand, there are more significants to watch the adveristing and get apropriate information towarda the product. Sometimes curise people likes adversite because in that they get just headline, after that they research on that. For example, those who want to buy new car and they aware about new trending and all so they visit specific store and get more details about desire car. This is less time consuming and get best things due to current affairs.

On the other hand, in the busy schedule of routine, people do not have much time to watch the ads on social media, they aviod advertising page in new paper as well. If teenagers watch such kind of advertise relation to adults then it gives them negative impact on them, moreover they ask some question to their parents, they were not able to give answers because of age gap and not reliable for them. For instance, watching ads is more time consuming and some times people skip ads, that is not relatable for their subject.

In conclusion, people belives that it common to watch ads but it is more useful in current time to get proper details, while other community pay lack of attention and for that, they suffer more in such things. I think if we get ads those who can watch with their family then it is best, otherwise somtime get peoblem with children due to age issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the view that advertising successfully persuades buyers and the counter-view that people pay little attention due to saturation. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times unclear. For instance, the argument about teenagers and age gaps in the third paragraph is tangential and poorly connected to the core issue of ad fatigue. The writer's position is stated in the conclusion, but overall the ideas are under-developed and lack the depth required for a higher band. This corresponds to Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing an attempt at a logical structure with introductory and concluding remarks, as well as clear transition markers such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, the overall progression is hindered by confusing sentences and unclear referencing pronouns (e.g., 'they were not able to give answers because of age gap and not reliable for them'). Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is frequently mechanical or faulty, making the flow difficult to follow at times. This aligns with Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and spelling that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'mordern' instead of modern, 'belive' instead of believe, 'significants' instead of significance, 'curise' instead of curious, and 'aviod' instead of avoid. Attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'appropriate information' or 'current affairs', are often unnatural or inaccurate in context. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. This fits the Band 5 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of sentence structures, with frequent grammatical errors. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are often faulty and confusing, such as 'For example, those who want to buy new car and they aware about new trending and all so they visit specific store...'. Punctuation and subject-verb agreement errors are common (e.g., 'people belives', 'some times people skip ads, that is not relatable'). These persistent errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader. This is characteristic of Band 5.
