IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

There is an arguement going on if avertisment still makes people buy a product or not. This easy will discuse both points.

On one hand, avertising has helped a lot of induividuals to be able to showcase their product or service and make it known to people and most of them has sold their product because it was advertised and peope know it already. A lot of people go on social media to look for a the best place to buy their product if advart are not beign done people will not know of your product. Furthermore, as a matter of fact social media is currently a place where advert are done and high numbers of people use the internet so you have a chance of selling if you are able to advdertise your business on the internet.

On the other hand, some persons do not listin to adverts anymore because so many advert are lies and do not say the truth about the product and advert have been misused currently also there are scam too so some people do not wtach adverts anymore. For instance my brother was scamed last week because he clicked a link that came with an advert and he lost his money so this kind os person will not pay attention to adverts anymore.

On my own opinon, it is true that advert no longer make some people to but a product but i belive some persons are still succesful at it and is still helping so many companies to gain visibility becuse i recently bought something because i saw it and social media and i liked it in other word if in did see it i would not have bought it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that advertising successfully persuades buyers and that it is ignored due to prevalence—alongside a clear personal position. Ideas are presented, but their development is limited and occasionally repetitive. For example, the point about social media visibility is reiterated without introducing new supporting evidence. Additionally, there are minor typos in the prompt interpretation such as stating 'this easy will discuse'. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, placing it firmly at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level. Because the development lacks depth and extension, it aligns best with Band 5.5 descriptors for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs representing an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing basic paragraphing awareness. However, progression is frequently disrupted by poor cohesive devices and a lack of proper punctuation. Sentences run together without appropriate conjunctions or full stops, such as '...people know it already. A lot of people go on social media to look for a the best place to buy their product if advart are not beign done people will not know of your product.' Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive ties are mechanical or missing entirely. These organizational and linking faults place the response at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited range of vocabulary that is minimally adequate for the task. There are frequent spelling errors throughout the response, such as 'arguement' instead of argument, 'avertisment' and 'avertring' instead of advertising, 'induividuals' instead of individuals, 'peope' instead of people, 'listin' instead of listen, 'wtach' instead of watch, 'scamed' instead of scammed, and 'belive' instead of believe. While meaning is generally clear despite these errors, the lexical control is weak, restricting the vocabulary score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical accuracy is very low. Run-on sentences and comma splices are prevalent, such as '...there are scam too so some people do not wtach adverts anymore.' There are also noticeable structural errors and tense inconsistencies, such as 'if advart are not beign done' and 'if in did see it i would not have bought it'. Errors are frequent and often cause some difficulty for the reader, though they do not completely obscure the overall meaning. This performance corresponds to a Band 5.0.
