IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Advertisements play a crucial role in this contemporary society for the marketing of business. Some individuals consider that advertisement of products is significant as it persuade people to purchase products while a few individuals think that advertising is so widespread that poeple are not engaging to watch them. This essay will discuss both views before my opinion as why advertisement should remain essential.

On the one hand, commercials play a vital role in persuading persons to purchase the interesting products. many people wants to buy better quality products that can be essential for their daily use. It is beneficial for the individuals to expand their business through attractive ads on the internet as they may use various images that pear so engaging and attract people's attention. For instance, if an individual is searching for a pair of shoes and he come across an ads that contain shoes marketing. so, he will definitely search in that website and it will persuade him to buy shoes.

On the other hand, some people think that the advertisements are so common all over the world that individuals take less interest to purchase the products. It can be due to several reasons. One major reason is the repeatative phenomenon as many commercials are too repeatative that people lose interest to watch them. Furthermore, persons are sceptive about the ads because they already know that the companies will show its positive sides and the individuals may not know about their detrimental impacts. To illustrate, if someone orders a product but on receiving the quality of that product may vary as sometimes appearances are deceptive so, he would not wants to buy products because of advertisements.

From my perspective, commercials are significant as many people find them convinient and reliable. Although, sometimes ads may be boring for people and they do not prefer to purchase anything due to trust issues or they do not want to rely on internet business before checking its reviews. But i belive that they should continue to market their products as somehow they persuade individuals to buy things.

To conclude, advertisements are beneficial as they attract consumers to purchase varoius products in which they are interested more. Moreover, these ads can be both useful for people as well as marketing companies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising—its effectiveness in persuading buyers versus its ubiquity leading to consumer apathy—and clearly states an opinion in the introduction and body paragraphs. The ideas are generally relevant, but the support tends to be repetitive and somewhat under-developed, relying on simple examples such as searching for shoes online. Furthermore, there is a tendency to over-generalise or state assertions without deep elaboration. These characteristics align best with the Band 6 descriptor, where all parts are addressed with relevant ideas, but some elements are under-developed or lack robust extension.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is arranged into a logical overall structure, following a clear four-paragraph essay format with an introduction, two body paragraphs discussing opposing views, a personal perspective paragraph, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen with transitions like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' coupled with repetitive referencing and minor sequencing lapses. Moreover, logical progression within paragraphs can feel disjointed due to run-on sentences and punctuation issues. Consequently, the performance sits comfortably at Band 6, reflecting a coherent overall arrangement with some mechanical cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'contemporary society', 'marketing', 'consumers', and 'detrimental impacts'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'ubiquitous' (implied via widespread), 'sceptive' (sceptical), and 'deceptive', but these are occasionally undermined by word-choice errors, awkward collocations (e.g., 'repeatative phenomenon'), and spelling mistakes such as 'persuade' instead of 'persuades', 'convinient', and 'belive'. Because the vocabulary range is minimally adequate and attempts at less common items carry noticeable inaccuracies that occasionally require reader interpretation, a Band 5.5 score is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating conjunctions like 'as', 'although', and 'because'. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('advertisement of products is significant as it persuade', 'many people wants'), article misuse, and sentence fragments or run-on sentences (e.g., 'so, he would not wants to buy products because of advertisements'). These errors are frequent enough to cause occasional difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5 descriptor well, though the presence of some complex structures keeps it from falling lower.
