IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In a world of advertisement it is impossible for people to take their eyes off advertisement . Everywhere we go we can easily find an advertisement near us . Some people argue that advertisement is no longer successful in persuading people . In my opinion both points are true to some extent before conclusion we need to discuss some points for both the sides .

Advertisement is a great tool to persuade people to buy things by telling them more about the products - it's advantages and as well as disadvantages . Advertisement tells people about the product details in comparision to the other products exist in market , hence to create a good image of a product to persuade people to buy that product and increase it's sale. Nowadays advertisements are everywhere - hoardings, posters and even in our screens so it's too hard to ignore a advertisement .

On the other hand I believe that we see advertisements so frequently nowadays everywhere not just on billboards ,posters but also on our screens too much that it is difficult to pay attention to each and every advertisement we see .

Furthermore, I agree there are so many advertisements to pay attention too but it is also very hard to miss on a good advertisement that is creative and unique in selling their products because main function of an advertisement is to grab attention of audience and to let them know about product . for example there are brands such as zomato and swiggy which do creative advertisement to grab the attention of their audience.

In conclusion, Advertisement is a great tool for both buissness and people to communicate with their target audience . There are too many advertisement to pay attention to but still it is very hard to miss on a good , eye-catchy, creative advertisement .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising—its persuasiveness and its ubiquity leading to inattention—while also presenting a clear personal opinion. The student introduces the topic in the introduction, supports arguments with examples such as Zomato and Swiggy, and concludes appropriately. However, some ideas are slightly repetitive, and the development could be more fully extended to reach higher bands. For instance, the discussion on how advertisements provide product details is somewhat basic. Overall, the requirements of the prompt are satisfactorily covered, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, the progression is occasionally hindered by repetitive phrasing, and some sentences lack smooth transitions. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and punctuation around cohesive markers needs better control. Paragraphing is present, but the internal logical flow of ideas could be tighter to achieve a higher band score. This performance fits the Band 6 criteria.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'ubiquity' (implied), 'persuading', 'hoardings', and 'eye-catchy'. However, there are notable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'in our screens' instead of 'on our screens', 'buissness' (spelling error), and 'miss on' instead of 'miss out on'. While these lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching Band 7. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, matching the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly missing articles ('an advertisement', 'the market'), incorrect prepositions ('in our screens'), and run-on structures without proper punctuation breaks. For example, 'for example there are brands such as zomato and swiggy which do creative advertisement to grab the attention of their audience.' lacks capitalization and punctuation. Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, placing the response solidly at Band 6.
