IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people debate about the influence of advertising on individuals. Certain people talk about the efficient advertising skills that persuad people to purchase stuff whereas another prortion of the population does not even acknowledge it.

Overall, the influence of advertising can not be neglected. There is a big percentage of society that still believes in the credibility of a product because of its visibility in the market. In my opinion things if that are promoted consiously and stratigically definitely impact the sales of that product. For instance, Amul butter is the oldest and most trusted butter brand of India. Its still relevant in the market because of its innovative and over the top advertising. People prefer Amul butter over any other brand as they are widely exposed to its publicity.

On the other hand, over advertising can become a menace for some people. Advertising includes not only virtual but physical promotion of the goods that includes tactile material like newspapers, brouchers and huge banners.that are used to impact consumer constantly. For example, brochures inside newspapers are simply thrown into garbage with acknowledging the advertising, because people are over informed or over exposed with multiple online and paper based advertisments that they don't even prefer reading them.

In conclusion, strategic promotion of goods certainly improve its sale. However, the decision of purchasing anything still lies in the hands of its consumers. Thus we should consiously buy the stuff that we need rather than getting influenced by the constant exposure of advertisements around us.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that advertising is persuasive and that it is too common to be noticed—while also providing a clear personal opinion. The student presents relevant ideas, such as the persistence of trust in legacy brands like Amul and the phenomenon of consumers ignoring intrusive leaflets and brochures. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed and lack extended explanation. For instance, the discussion on consumer choice at the end is somewhat brief. Nevertheless, a clear position is maintained throughout, placing the response comfortably at Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesive devices are at times mechanical or somewhat basic, as seen with transitions like 'Overall,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion.' Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the sentence 'Things if that are promoted consiously,' which disrupts the logical flow and clarity of progression. Overall, the organizational structure meets the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, including terms like 'credibility,' 'strategic promotion,' 'menace,' and 'exposure.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'persuad' instead of persuade, 'prortion' instead of portion, 'consiously' instead of consciously, 'stratigically' instead of strategically, and 'brouchers' instead of brochures. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they demonstrate limitations in lexical control that prevent the response from achieving a higher band score, placing it at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure with sentences like 'People prefer Amul butter over any other brand as they are widely exposed to its publicity.' However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'Some people debate about the influence,' 'things if that are promoted,' and missing punctuation/articles like 'brouchers and huge banners.that are used.' While these errors occasionally cause the reader to pause, they rarely impede overall communication, supporting a Band 5.5 score.
