IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often argued by some people that advertisement is very beneficial to persuading people to buy things. Meanwhile, others believe that people cannot pay attention to advertisement. However, I believe that we should use more attractive way to persuading people to buy things.

On the one hand, supporters of the view that advertising is best way to motivate someone to buy items, believe that by telling features and advantages of items, people shows their interest to buy item. As if people cannot familiar about the features of the item, they cannot show any interest in that item. For example, a survey held in Dubai, which concluded that the companies those who advertise their items on social media, sells 40% faster than the item who is not asdvertised. Thus, the supporters of this view support their findings back their analysis with valid arguments.

While on the other hand, advocates of the view that people cannot pay attention to advertisement believes that advertising is common on social media. As everyone advertising thing on social media and explains features that the item don't have. For instance, it is expected that Facebookwill remove the advertisement option by 2028, because the face items are advetrised by people that can effect negatively on people lives. Hence, this view also carry a lot of weightage.

However, in my opinion companies should make advertisement more interested and try a funny way to explain features of things. As this can force people to watch full advertisement.

To sum up, although people can't pay attention in watching advertisement, but I believe that advertisement can help companies to sell items fastly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising and providing a personal opinion. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on why people no longer pay attention to advertisements mentions Facebook removing advertising options by 2028, which is speculative and unclear. The position is clear throughout the essay, but the arguments lack depth and solid supporting evidence. The examples provided, such as the survey in Dubai, are generalized rather than fully explained. This places the response in Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response features a clear overall structure with four distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting opposing views, and a conclusion. However, progression is somewhat hindered by mechanical cohesive devices and repetitive referencing. Transitional phrases such as 'On the one hand' and 'While on the other hand' are used, but sentences within the body paragraphs lack smooth connections, creating a somewhat disjointed reading experience. Paragraphing is present and adequate for the task, but logical transitions between sentences need improvement. This performance is consistent with Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'supporters of the view', 'advantage of items', and 'weightage'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, incorrect word forms, and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'advertisement is very beneficial to persuading', 'cannot familiar', 'face items', and 'sell items fastly'. These errors demonstrate a limited control of word choice and word formation, which can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, placing the response firmly in Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty or unnatural. There are numerous grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('advertisement is common on social media'), incorrect verb tenses ('companies those who advertise', 'that can effect negatively'), and preposition misuse. While communication is generally maintained despite these errors, they occur frequently and affect the overall accuracy of the writing. This corresponds to the Band 5.0 level.
