Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views regarding advertising, discussing its persuasiveness and ubiquity, and provides a personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, the discussion on how companies target youth is supported by a single example regarding Unilever and a microscope screen, but this point is not fully extended into a broader argument. The position is generally clear throughout, though the expression of ideas sometimes wanders. It meets the criteria for Band 5.5 to 6.0, as all parts of the task are addressed, but the ideas require more thorough elaboration and extension to reach a higher band level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but paragraphing is poorly managed. The second body paragraph is extremely long and crams multiple disparate ideas together without clear internal progression. Cohesive devices are frequently repetitive (e.g., 'moreover', 'furthermore', 'thus') and sometimes inaccurate. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'they shows their products' where the pronoun antecedent is ambiguous. While there is an overall attempt to organise the essay logically, the mechanical use of cohesive ties and weak paragraphing place this response firmly in the Band 5.0 range.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling errors ('extermely', 'tavel', 'craete', 'opt', 'Adevertising', 'wacth', 'fials', 'advertisiment'). The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'manipulate', 'brainwash', and 'optimised', but these are often used inaccurately or inappropriately in context. The range is minimally adequate for the task, but noticeable lexical errors and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and occasionally impede smooth communication, aligning with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The writer demonstrates an attempt at complex sentences, but these structures are very frequently faulty, containing severe punctuation issues such as run-on sentences and comma splices (e.g., 'We watch many advertisment in our busy life on internet newspaper, digital media, television shows, even in public places, when we tavel we see thousand of people advertising their product...'). Subject-verb agreement errors are common (e.g., 'Few individual gives', 'advertising also have'), along with tense inconsistencies and missing articles. The wide frequency of grammatical errors places the response at Band 4.5, as errors frequently cause strain for the reader.
