IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Opinions remain divided on whether commercial advertising is exceptionally persausive in driving consumer purchases or whether its omnipresence has rendered the public largely indifferent. In my assessment, while relentless advertisement exposure undoubtedly breeds consumer fatigue, well-executed marketing campaigns continue to exert a powerful influence on consumer behavior.
On the one hand, promotional activities serve an indispensable function in modern commerce, permeating daily life through digital outlets, print media, television programming, and public transit systems. By establishing crucial initial exposure, these marketing channels prompt individuals to opt for specific brands, theraby sustaining coporate sales. To maximize their reach, corporations frequently employ sophisticated tactics to engage younger demographics, including sponsoring interactive events within educational institutions. A notable illustration of is Unilever's school initative, where students were invited to observe micro-organisms on digital screens before being presented with branded gifts. Through such experiential cultivate early brand familiarity and boost their long-term revenues.
On the other hand, the efficacy of advertising is severely undermined by ad saturation and misleading claims.
Commercial routinely depict products in an idealized light ; however, when post-purchase utility fails to match expectations, consumers naturally become skeptical and disregard future promotions. Moreover, the repetative nature of broadcast and digital advertising inevitably induces viewer fatigue, prompting individuals to actively bypass commercials or switch off their devices altogether. A similar pattern occurs in physical settings, where commuters routinely ignore billboards and print media after repeated exposure. This behavior is the evident on digital platforms such as Youtube, where users almost instinctively hit the skip button the moment a pre-roll advertisement begins.
In conclusion, while persausive advertising can successfully motivate consumer spending, its impact diminishes significantly when content becomes repetitive or fails to deliver genuine value. I firmly believe that for promotional campaigns to reliably enhance sales, marketing strategies must evolve to align accurately with genuine consumer demand.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising—its persuasiveness versus public indifference due to omnipresence—and clearly provides a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are well developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of Unilever's school initiative and digital platforms like YouTube. The response maintains a clear position throughout, and arguments are logically extended. The task is fully covered, meeting the criteria for a strong band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are effectively divided into appropriate paragraphs, each focusing on a distinct view. Cohesive devices are used flexibly, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Moreover,' which help to guide the reader smoothly through the arguments. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, maintaining a coherent overall arrangement from the introduction to the concluding thoughts.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, utilizing less common items such as 'omnipresence,' 'consumer fatigue,' 'experiential,' and 'post-purchase utility.' There are, however, a few noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'persausive' (persuasive), 'theraby' (thereby), 'coporate' (corporate), 'initative' (initiative), and 'repetative' (repetitive). Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings and maintain appropriate academic style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
A good variety of complex structures is employed throughout the response, including participial phrases and conditional clauses. There are frequent error-free sentences, demonstrating solid control of grammar. However, a few minor grammatical and mechanical errors persist, such as an incomplete sentence fragment ('A notable illustration of is Unilever's school initative') and a stray punctuation mark ('idealized light ; however'). These errors are non-systematic and do not impede overall communication, placing the response solidly in the band 7 range.
