IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is argued that advertising is the most successful way for convincing people to purchase things, while other individuals say that in the modern era advertising a product had become a similar trend that no one pays attention. In this essay, both sides will be discussed before providing my opinion.
On the one hand, some people believe that advertising products or schemes has become so common that it does not attract any attention of the local people. The main reason for such believe is that everyone sees numerous advertise during a day which had the mind of people to just avoid the advertise. Another reason to avoid the advertise can be that the particular advertise is not related to the content in which the person is not interested. For example, if a man is watching a movie and suddenly a advertise related to a discount on women clothes come then he will pay any attention to that particular advertise. Therefore, it is true to some extent that people avoid the advertise.
On the other hand, many individuals support the saying that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. There are many reasons which can strongly support this saying. One of the main reasons is making a advertise in a such way that it can show the needs and benefits of the products which can be very helpful to the buyer. An advertise of meta AI glasses is the best example of such advertise which showed the benefits of using AI glasses in their daily life. Editing the advertisement is also another important factor. A well designed and edited advertise can leave a good impression in the mind of watcher. And having a popular celebrity or sports person in the advertisement makes is even more capable of attracting and convincing the public.
In conclusion, although there are some advertise in the past that have failed to attract people, by showing how the product is useful, editing the advertise well and making the famous person promote the product can certainly make the advertise successful.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising and providing a personal opinion in the conclusion. The introduction outlines the two perspectives clearly, and the body paragraphs explore the arguments that people ignore common advertisements as well as the opposing view that persuasive techniques and celebrity endorsements make them effective. However, the development of ideas leans towards repetition, particularly in the vocabulary used for concepts like advertisements. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Because all parts of the prompt are addressed and ideas are generally relevant, the response aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay is coherent overall with a clear logical arrangement, dividing the discussion into introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the pronoun referencing is occasionally imprecise, and the repetition of words like 'advertise' creates a slightly clunky flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints, but the overall progression could be smoother. This places the response firmly within the Band 6 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'persuading', 'discount', and 'celebrity'. However, there is a persistent lexical error in the improper use of the noun 'advertise' instead of 'advertisement' or 'ad' throughout the text, as seen in 'numerous advertise' and 'an advertise'. There are also minor word choice inaccuracies, such as 'for convincing' instead of 'for convincing people' or 'to convince'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points, the frequent word-form errors restrict the score to a Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense consistency, articles, and word forms. Examples include 'advertising... had become', 'does not attract any attention of the local people', and 'makes is even more capable'. Subject-verb agreement and preposition choices also show recurring slips. These errors do not completely impede communication, as the reader can still follow the arguments, but they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from reaching Band 6.5.
