IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In today's rapidly evolving world, advertising has become an indispensable part of human lives, as it educate them regarding new products and services in the market. While a substantial number of individuals assert that advertising has been proven to be succeed for companies to influence people's purchasing habits, others contend that this phenomenon has become so prevalent that humans do not pay attention to it. This essay will discuss both assumptions before explaining my opinion.
To begin with, proponents emphasize the view that companies often promote products and services via exaggerated information. By means of this is, celebrity endorsements , visual appeals and videos, which foresee a hike in a demand for products and servies. Admittedly, in recent years, renowned actors and actresses have become role modles for general public, and industries therefore hire them to encourage population to purchase their companies' produces. As a consequence, people buy products and servies, which are not vital to them. Moreover, retailors and manufacturers prefer to demonstate discounts, rewards and the introduction of new products in the advertisments. therefore, if individuals do not constitute any knowledge regarding these offers, they can get information via adverts. As a consequence, by watching news regarding the special offers and discounts, consumers' interest to purchase producats can be enabled by adverts.
By contrast, despite the given argument, a myriad of consumers reckon that the transformation of technology has enabled them to collect relevant data concerning items. Due to the fact that social media and digital advertisments have accompanied feedback and comment section, through which prefer to scutinize response given by consumers who have bought advertised item rather than watching whole advert. Furthermore, over the past few years, it can be observed that, televisions, social media platforms and radio illustrate overly promotative and repetative ads, which lead to consumer fatigue. Hence, people' preferences have been altered, and they prefer to visit physical store by checking physically.
In my opinion, humans have sufficient awareness to buy produts and servise, which are imperative to them.
To conclude, although advertisments often enhance knowledge about discounts, rewards along with new products to encourage consumer to buy, people's can be influenced by every misinformative adverts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising—its effectiveness in persuading buyers versus consumer fatigue due to its omnipresence—and provides the writer's opinion. The introduction clearly outlines the scope of the essay, and both body paragraphs present relevant arguments. For instance, the first body paragraph explores celebrity endorsements and special offers, while the second discusses digital feedback sections and ad fatigue. However, the development of ideas in some places lacks clarity and logical expansion, particularly in the conclusion where the final sentence trails off into a fragmented thought ('people's can be influenced by every misinformative adverts'). Furthermore, the writer's own opinion is stated rather briefly and could have been more fully integrated throughout the discussion. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, earning a solid Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a clear overall arrangement with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'By contrast' are employed to signal transitions between ideas. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the phrase 'By means of this is' is ungrammatical and disrupts the flow, and sentences like 'through which prefer to scutinize response' suffer from missing subjects and pronouns. Additionally, logical progression is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and punctuation issues, such as the lowercase 'therefore' following a comma splice. These weaknesses place the coherence and cohesion of the essay firmly at a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for an academic discussion, including terms such as 'indispensable', 'prevalent', 'endorsements', and 'scutinize'. There are instances of less common lexical items being used, which shows an adequate range for the task. However, noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices occur throughout the text. Examples include 'succeed' instead of 'successful', 'modles' instead of 'models', 'produces' instead of 'products', 'retailors' instead of 'retailers', and 'promotative and repetative' instead of 'promotional and repetitive'. Furthermore, collocation is sometimes unnatural, such as in 'constitute any knowledge' instead of 'have any knowledge'. These errors occasionally cause slight hesitation for the reader but do not impede overall communication, supporting a Band 6.0 rating.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like constructions (e.g., 'if individuals do not constitute any knowledge...'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. For example, 'advertising... educate them' should be 'educates them', 'consumer interest... can be enabled' is awkward and passive where active makes more sense, and 'people's can be influenced' contains a pronoun error. Punctuation errors are also present, such as uncapitalized words following periods and misused commas. Despite these frequent errors, the meaning is generally decipherable, which aligns with the descriptors for Band 5.0, though the variety of structures keeps it at a borderline 5.0/5.5. A score of 5.0 reflects the frequency of grammatical slips that impact sentence control.
