IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

These days some people seem to agure that advertising is a successful strategy at persuading consumers to purchase new and updated products. On the other hand, others are of the opinion that the adverstising has become more common and we should not waste our time to look at. However, I will discuss both these views and give my opinion that what consumer should consider or not.

In the first place, it would be quite interesting to note that adversting has significant influenced on people lives and company's spend million of dollars on advertisement to sale their products and to make it successfull. Various company's spend too much time to understand consumer need and what type of products and services meet customer demand. One illustration for this is that a company made a unique product after completing a deep research on people behaviour and then launch advertisting campaign on different platforms. such as social media, electronic media, and billboards to persuade consumers to buy that product which can be fulfill their demands.

Yet there is a second perspective which needs consideration is that advertising is so popular now a days and people try to avoid them whether it is beneficial for them or not because it has widely spreaded among all places. For instance, if a person open his phone or application in the smartphone the advertised post pop up first which make a person frustrated and annoyed from the advertisment.

In conclusion, I am convinced to say that it is indeed a debatable issue which needs further analysis and discussion. However, in the light of above-discussed arguments and examples. I am quite safe to conclude that the advantages of advertising overweigh its disadvantages as it persuade us to buy new and well updated products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising and providing an opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, in the first body paragraph, the argument that companies spend money on research and marketing is relevant, but the explanation remains general and lacks specific real-world examples beyond vague statements. Similarly, the second view is introduced effectively with the idea of consumer annoyance, but the supporting example about smartphone pop-ups is underdeveloped. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of support prevents the response from reaching higher band scores. This aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor where all parts are addressed, but some ideas are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall arrangement with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, satisfying basic organizational requirements. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, transition phrases like 'In the first place' and 'Yet there is a second perspective which needs consideration is that' are overly wordy and somewhat unnatural. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'whether it is beneficial for them or not because it has widely spreaded among all places,' where the pronoun reference is ambiguous. Logical progression between sentences can also be jerky, placing this text firmly in Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'consumers,' 'strategy,' 'platforms,' and 'frustrated.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'agure' instead of 'argue,' 'adverstising,' 'successfull' with a double 'l,' 'people lives' instead of 'people's lives,' and 'spreaded' instead of 'spread.' Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'significant influenced,' but they often contain grammatical inaccuracies. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, their frequency prevents the essay from achieving a Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense usage, subject-verb agreement, and article placement. Examples include 'company's spend million of dollars' (should be companies spend millions of dollars), 'can be fulfill' (should be can fulfill), 'people try to avoid them' (pronoun mismatch with 'a person'), and 'advantages of advertising overweigh its disadvantages' (should be outweigh). Punctuation errors are also present, such as a full stop before 'such as' in the second body paragraph. Because errors occur frequently across complex structures and occasionally cause minor strain for the reader, a Band 5.5 is appropriate.
