IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is often argued that a group of people think that advertisment get our attention and force us to buy things. However, other believes that they are too common to get our attention. I completely agree with the first group of people but this essay will discuss both views before reaching a reasonable conclusion.
To begin with, one of the main reasons is that an attractive advertisment get our attention for sure. It is because they use a variety of colours and aslo the famous actors or heroes which doubles the attention and make it look even more attractive. Furthermore, when we see a wide range of celebrities on the advertsiment board using some specific products of a company, we get more consious that we will use these porduct too. This mindset allow us to get those things.
On the other hand, some believes that they are just too common to get our attention. It is because they are too familiar with the actors or billboards and they get anxious while viewing it. It can be due to this reason that people are too busy now a days, that they don't have time to watch or find those advertisment board attractive. Whereas, those who think they are not important usually have lack of interest with buying different items.
In conclusion, the points discussed above highlights the key aspects of the issue. Overall, I remain convinced that advertising is extremely important because they are helpful fro everyone.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on repetitive points rather than deep extension. For instance, the discussion on why advertisements attract buyers mentions 'colours and also the famous actors' but lacks further elaboration. Furthermore, the length requirement of 250 words is not met, as the response contains only 246 words. This slight under-length violation prevents the task response from achieving a higher band. Consequently, the score reflects a partial fulfillment of all task requirements with limited development, aligning with the Band 5 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay has a recognisable overall structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing some organisation. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and paragraphing is occasionally weak or used mechanically. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'It is because' and 'Furthermore'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun 'they' in phrases like 'some believes that they are just too common' where the antecedent is slightly ambiguous. These limitations place the response securely within the Band 5 descriptor for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words such as 'advertisment', 'celebrities', and 'billboards'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors throughout the text, including 'advertisment', 'aslo', 'consious', 'porduct', and 'highlights' (instead of highlight). Word choice and word formation errors also appear, such as 'lack of interest with buying' instead of 'interest in'. These persistent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the lexical score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional or dependent clauses (e.g., 'when we see a wide range of celebrities... we get more consious'). However, attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty, and there are basic grammatical errors throughout, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('a group of people think', 'some believes', 'advertising... because they are helpful'). Punctuation and phrasing errors also occur, such as 'now a days' instead of 'nowadays'. These frequent errors place the grammatical range and accuracy at Band 5.
