Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising—its persuasiveness and the fatigue it causes—and clearly states the writer's own opinion in the body and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and generally supported with examples, such as smartphones and targeted ads. However, some arguments remain somewhat limited or slightly under-developed due to brief explanations, leaning towards generalisations rather than deep exploration. For instance, the discussion on consumer cynicism could be pushed further. Nonetheless, the task is fully covered, establishing a clear position throughout, which aligns comfortably with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, dedicating sections to the introduction, two body paragraphs discussing opposing views, the writer's opinion, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In my opinion', though they can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive ('Furthermore', 'In addition'). Referencing is sometimes unclear, for example, the pronoun use in 'so people are accounted of it and ingore it'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but overall transitions between sentences and ideas sometimes lack smooth progression, resulting in a somewhat disjointed flow, fitting a Band 6 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'integral part', 'purchasing decisions', and 'trustworthy'. However, there are frequent spelling errors ('cosumers', 'intrested', 'infuencing', 'comman', 'laguages', 'amke', 'advertisments', 'becuase', 'avaibale', 'mobilephone', 'repitation', 'cuase', 'incraesing') and occasional word-choice issues ('advertise' used as a noun, 'so people are accounted of it'). While these errors are noticeable and detract from the technical quality of the writing, they do not severely impede communication because the intended meaning remains transparent, placing this securely at Band 5.5 or 6.0. Given the frequency of basic spelling mistakes, a 5.5 is fully justified.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'While other argue that...' and 'its effectiveness depends on how trustworthy it is'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with multiple errors including subject-verb agreement issues ('While other argue', 'advertisement give their vital role'), missing articles ('in this following essay will discuss'), and awkward phrasing ('so people are accounted of it'). Punctuation and spacing issues are also present throughout the text. These errors occur frequently and occasionally cause the reader some difficulty, demonstrating a level that sits between Band 5 and Band 6.
