IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

A few advocate that advertisements notoriously succeed at convincing the contemporary society, while the opposing party adovates that due to the increased popularity they have little to no impact on the targeted segments. I strongly concur with the former notion.

The most compelling argument in favour of this view is that the adequate and effective marketing is the primary factor for businesses to reach their deisred customer segments. Without the appropriate marketing, it is likely that the products offered are immensely overshadowed and not reach the targeted audience. Another significant variable is the apparent affects of the influencer advertisements, the statistics indicate that the products encouraged by the popular and most followed influencers definitely face ascending sales, regardless of their quality and effectiveness.

On the contrary, others argue that the extensive saturation of advertisement has diminshed its impact. This is primarily evident in the instances where a single advertisement is displayed numerous times, consequently loosing its required impact. Additionally, the usage of consistent and repeated marketing techniques can eventually result in loss of the desired appeal. For instance, the majority of the advertisements displayed on the TV primarly go unnoticed, hence showcasing the importance of choosing the appropriate platforms.

To sum it up, there is an ongoing debate about the impact of advertisement, with one party arguing its successful impact and the opposing party supporting its negligible persuassion.I wholeheartedly stand with the former perspective, that using the right platform, and effective marketing techniques, advertisements can achieve the purpose of convincing the targeted audience.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising—its persuasiveness versus its saturation leading to inattention—and provides a clear position throughout. The writer's stance is introduced in the first paragraph ("I strongly concur with the former notion") and reaffirmed in the conclusion. Ideas are adequately extended and supported, such as mentioning influencer marketing and television advertisement saturation. However, some arguments, such as the point about marketing techniques resulting in a loss of appeal, remain slightly general and could benefit from further specific development to reach the higher bands. Overall, the requirements of the prompt are fully met with clear, relevant ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction of views and position, arguments supporting persuasiveness, counter-arguments regarding saturation, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "The most compelling argument", "On the contrary", and "Additionally". However, there are minor cohesion and referencing issues, such as the slight awkwardness in paragraph transitions and minor punctuation issues. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the essay logically. Overall, the structural flow is easy to follow, supporting the reader's comprehension effectively.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as "contemporary society", "overshadowed", "saturation", and "diminished". However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including "adovates" instead of advocates, "deisred" instead of desired, "affects" instead of effects, "loosing" instead of losing, and "primarly" instead of primarily. These lexical inaccuracies and typos slightly detract from the overall impression and prevent the score from reaching a higher band, though communication is not severely impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating some ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses (e.g., "While the opposing party advocates that due to the increased popularity they have little to no impact..."). There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as "A few advocate that..." (missing an object like 'people'), "that the adequate and effective marketing is..." (unnecessary article), and "and not reach the targeted audience" (parallelism error). Punctuation and spacing errors also occur, such as the missing space before "I wholeheartedly" in the final paragraph. These errors occur frequently enough to place the essay firmly in band 6.
