IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is argued by some individuals that advertising is highly victorious at convincing to buy products, while other people claim that it is so common that nobody pay focus on it. I strongly agree that ads are sucessful in appealing the customers to buy things.
On the one hand, advertisement is powerful tool in modern marketing techniques. Frequent exposure help customers identify, remember, and trust a brand over local products. Attracts new consumers and encourages in repeating purchases. Advertising the product with celebrities endorsement play a crucial role to gravitate the people to buy things with more trust. For example, Nike reported that after hiring Ronaldo for advertising of their products, they earned almost a billion dollars profit in a year. Keep users updated on discounts, sales, and special offers saving them money. It generates job opportunities across social media, creative agencies, and digital marketing. It provide the information for buyers to make decision according to their budget. In this busy routine, people remained upto date to latest products that are launched in market.
On the other hand, people are flooded with hundreds of commercials daily on social media. television, and websites, people develop blindness and naturally filter them out. Consumers actively skip video ads, install ads-blockers or switch channel as a defence mechanism against interruption. Modern and technically advanced buyers are aware of exaggeration in marketing, instead of trusting on sponsred ads, they relay on word of mouth.
In conclusion, although advertising is playing a crucial role to buy things more intentionally and precisely, but promotions are not trustworthy all the time so people do not take them on serious note.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The writer presents relevant ideas regarding both the persuasiveness of ads and the phenomenon of ad fatigue. However, the body paragraphs suffer from underdeveloped points and frequent lists of disjointed clauses rather than fully extended arguments. For example, in the second paragraph, points like 'Attracts new consumers and encourages in repeating purchases' lack sufficient explanation and examples. Despite the lack of full extension in places, a clear position is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 6 profile well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the two distinct viewpoints. However, cohesion within the paragraphs is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the second paragraph consists largely of fragmented sentences and bullet-like points lacking smooth transitions (e.g., 'Keep users updated on discounts... It generates job opportunities...'). Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as pronoun use and missing subjects in clauses like 'Frequent exposure help customers...'. Progression is evident, but the cohesive links require better control to achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'celebrities endorsement', 'ad-blockers', and 'defence mechanism'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'highly victorious' instead of 'highly successful', 'nobody pay focus' instead of 'nobody pays attention', and 'appealing the customers' instead of 'appealing to customers'. Furthermore, spelling errors ('sucessful', 'sponsred', 'upto') and awkward phrasing prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. Nevertheless, the meaning remains clear throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Frequent exposure help', 'It provide'), missing subjects or verbs (e.g., 'Attracts new consumers', 'Keeping users updated'), and prepositional errors (e.g., 'trusting on sponsored ads'). While some complex sentences are successfully produced, the density of basic grammatical and punctuation errors means that simple sentences are often more reliable than complex ones. These errors rarely impede overall communication, placing the response securely in Band 5.5.
