Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that advertising is persuasive and that it is too common to notice—and providing a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times repetitive. For instance, the discussion on mobile phones mentions they are advertised on websites and social media, but this point is not deeply extended. The ideas presented are relevant to the prompt, but the reasoning is often brief and lacks specific elaboration. While a clear position is stated, the execution falls into the Band 5 to 6 range because the ideas are under-developed and the supporting arguments lack depth and clarity. Therefore, a score of 5.5 is appropriate for Task Achievement as it meets the basic requirements while remaining somewhat restricted in elaboration and depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is organised into four paragraphs, following a standard introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which shows an attempt at paragraphing. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing phrasing, such as starting body paragraphs with 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' but following them with unclear cohesive ties. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often inaccurate or mechanical, such as 'In addition the recent and modern world' and 'accuding to this way'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it hard to follow the exact logical flow between sentences. These issues place the response firmly in the Band 5 category, where there is some organisation and use of cohesive devices, but clear overall progression and accurate linking are lacking.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms like 'things', 'people', and 'advertising'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and word formation throughout the text, such as 'benefical at presuading is', 'comany', 'atteintion', 'opose', 'pepole', 'adertising', 'onlion', 'platfrom', and 'gambing'. Although the writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'persuading', 'consequences', and 'platform', the frequent inaccuracies in spelling and lexical choices cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication at times. This lexical profile aligns well with the Band 5 descriptor, which highlights a limited, minimally adequate range with noticeable errors that affect clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The essay exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. While the student attempts some complex sentences, these attempts are frequently faulty and fraught with structural errors. Examples include 'many company doing and spend a lot of money to promote there desire product' and 'pepole see a lot of ads on social media they effect the interest of some people and those can not pay attention'. Punctuation errors are also prevalent, with missing commas and run-on sentences that blur clause boundaries. Frequent grammatical errors and incorrect verb forms cause considerable strain for the reader, placing the response at Band 4.0, where errors are frequent and often distort meaning.
