IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that advertising is benefical for selling the product while some people considered it useless and not productive way to sell a product. In my opinion, advertising is essential strategy for marketing as people are dependent on technology and social media. In this essey, we will discuss about benefits and disadventages of advertisments.

In this modern era, people are dependent on social media. whenever, they want anything , they search it in any social media app and get to know about them and purchase it. For instance, if someone is using instagram and at the time of scrollimg he found a new product which he is not aware of can get by online shopping from any country. Therefore, if someone opened the new resturent , and upload the updates on any social media app, people come to know about them and it will help the business to touch the moon.

Whereas, advetisment is so common that we don't even pay attention to it.if the ad is not productive and creative we will just boared and will not pay attention towards it and some people do not believe on advetisments because of their bad experiences. For instance, if a girl saw a beautifull dress on a new website by advertisment , she will order it online after that she did not get a good product . Next she will not pay attention to ads because of bad experiences.

To sum up, advertisments help us to grow businesses, howover, people are dependent on technology and social media so ads help us in many ways while for some people ads are useless because of their bad experiences .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising and providing a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For example, the argument that people are dependent on social media is repeated in both the body paragraph and the conclusion, and the second view regarding people ignoring ads is supported by a single personal anecdote about a girl buying a dress. While a clear position is maintained throughout, the supporting ideas need deeper extension and varied examples to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is adequately addressed in line with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, two body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The student relies on repetitive transitional phrases such as 'For instance' and 'Therefore', and some linking expressions are misused, such as 'whereas' used to introduce a new sentence rather than connect clauses. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'get to know about them and purchase it'. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression between sentences within paragraphs sometimes falters due to abrupt shifts and mechanical transitions, fitting the Band 5 profile closely.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'essential strategy' and 'online shopping'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'benefical', 'essey', 'disadventages', 'advertisments', 'scrollimg', 'resturent', and 'boared'. These errors reflect a lack of control over common and less common lexical items. Although communication is not severely impeded and the meaning remains understandable, the frequency of lexical inaccuracies prevents the response from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and relative clauses such as 'if someone is using instagram and at the time of scrollimg he found a new product...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, subject-verb agreement, and article usage. Run-on sentences and comma splices are common, such as in the third paragraph ('if the ad is not productive and creative we will just boared...'). These errors can cause occasional difficulty for the reader, though basic meaning is generally conveyed, placing the response firmly at Band 5.
