IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

An increasing number of people are of the perspective that ubiquitous advertisement are successful at persuading consumers, to buy products they do not need. However, some people believe that advertising has become such a common norm that no one pay head to it anymore. According to my perspective, these ads are effective in manipulating us to buy products we don't need.

A number of people believe that, ads have become so common that no one pay attention to it. According to this perspective advertisement is so ubiquitous that now everyone knows the purpose behind ads. In addition, now people have started to understand these marketing tactics and do not fall for it anymore. They are well aware that these ads are made specifically to convince them into buying their products. For instance, now people are aware that a women on a shampo ad with healthy and shinny hair does not actully signify that her hair is the result of that product. Thus, these ads are not affective anymore.

On the other hand I believe that in this digitalized world advertisement has also changed its approaches. For instance, now AI surveliance is used to monitor people needs. According to their needs, ads are displayed to them, pursuing them that this product is of good quality. Furthermore, in contemprory era, influencers are being paid to advertise a specific product on their social platforms. Consequently, the followers of that influencer purchases's that product. Therefore, the trust of the followers is used as a tool to persuade the audience into purchasing things. Thus, advertisement is still successful into to convincing people, just the method is more digitalized.

In conclusion, some people believe that advertisement is so ubiquitous that it is not affectve anymore, however some people are of the opinion that advertisement is extremely successful in controlling the behaviours of the consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on advertising—that it is persuasive and that it is too common to be noticed—while also providing a clear personal position ("According to my perspective, these ads are effective"). The ideas are generally relevant and extended, particularly in the body paragraphs where examples like AI surveillance and influencer marketing are introduced. However, some arguments lack deeper elaboration. For instance, the discussion on shampoo ads in the second paragraph remains somewhat simplistic and repetitive ("Thus, these ads are not affective anymore"). Despite this, the main prompt requirements are fulfilled satisfactorily, earning a solid Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is structured into four distinct paragraphs, following a logical progression from introduction to opposing view, personal view, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as "On the other hand" and "In conclusion". However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the phrase "no one pay head to it" contains agreement errors, and the transition sentences within body paragraphs occasionally feel repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas, but overall cohesive links lack the flexibility and precision required for a Band 7. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as "ubiquitous", "surveillance", and "contemporary". However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the overall quality, including "advertisement" instead of advertisements, "pay head" instead of pay heed, "affective" instead of effective, "surveliance", "contemprory", and "purchases's". While these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the essay from achieving a Band 7. The lexical range is sufficient for a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ("ubiquitous advertisement are", "no one pay attention"), punctuation and article errors ("a women on a shampo ad"), and awkward preposition usage ("successful into to convincing people"). Complex sentence attempts are often marred by these inaccuracies, meaning the majority of sentences are not error-free. Nevertheless, meaning remains clear despite the flaws, placing this response securely at Band 5.5.
