IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's modern era, advertising is seen everywhere from television to social media platforms. Some individuals opine that advertisement is highly successful in persuading people to purchase products, while others believe that it is so common that people ignores it. This essay will discuss both views, and I personally agree with first view.

On one hand, there are many people who thinks that advertising has lost its effect due to its excessive presence. Nowadays, a person sees hundreds of advertisements in a single day on mobile phone, road hoardings and even in YouTube videos. Because of this overload, people usually skip the ads or scroll past them without giving any attention. For instance, most of the viewers click on skip button as soon as it appear on the screen, so the message of company never reach to them.

On the other hand, advertising still play a major role in influencing buying decisions of consumers. Companies spends huge amount of money on advertising because it gives them good return. Advertisements are designed with attractive visuals, celebrity faces and emotional storytelling which stays in the mind of customers subconsciously. For example, when a person goes to a shop to buy soft drink or a soap, he often choose the brand which he have seen frequently on television, even without realising it. Moreover, discount offers shown in advertisement motivates people to buy things which they does not actually need.

In my opinion, advertising is still successful in persuading customers, even if people thinks that they are not paying attention. Repeated exposure create familiarity with a brand, and familiarity leads to trust.

To conclude, although some people ignores advertisements due to their high frequency, I believe that they still influences purchasing behaviour of consumers in a powerful way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on advertising—whether it is successful at persuading consumers or too common to be noticed—and presents a clear personal opinion throughout the essay. The student's position is established in the introduction and maintained in the conclusion. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the use of skip buttons on YouTube and the subconscious influence of celebrity endorsements and discount offers. However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise in the development of some points, which places this performance firmly at Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs with distinct introductions, body paragraphs addressing each view, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as transitional phrases like 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'To conclude.' However, there are some occasional mechanical or slightly faulty cohesive links, such as referencing issues (e.g., 'the message of company never reach to them' and singular/plural mismatch in referencing 'brand' versus 'they'). Despite these minor flaws, the overarching structure flows smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, demonstrating some flexibility and precision with terms like 'subconsciously,' 'excessive presence,' and 'purchasing behaviour.' There are also attempts to use less common lexical items related to marketing and consumer habits. However, occasional word choice and collocation inaccuracies occur, such as 'ignores it' instead of 'ignore it' (plural subject) and 'first view' instead of 'the first view.' Spelling and word-form errors are present but do not impede communication, supporting a solid Band 6.0 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. There are several error-free sentences, particularly in the longer descriptive sections. However, numerous grammatical errors persist, especially with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'many people who thinks,' 'Companies spends,' 'advertisement motivates,' 'which does not actually need,' 'person... he have seen') and missing articles ('on mobile phone,' 'to buy soft drink or a soap'). These errors occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score, though they rarely impede overall communication.
